Hi everyone, we have just arrived on hols for 3 months with our little dog. Is there any walking groups based in Mojacar that wouldn’t mind us tagging along?

Nearly every Wednesday morning there's a walking group that meets outside Los Arcos (closed since two years ago). It is a serious walking group who charge nothing to join them. They have good walks both around Mojacar and beyond. Sometimes they drive to the walking area and might ask you for €1.00 to cover petrol. They walk as fast as the slowest walker. I have participated in some of the walks and no walk is too difficult. They are humorous, healthy, talkative, friendly etc.

I would point out some of the walks would be unsuitable to bring a dog. I'll say no more because I'll draw the fondle-the-dogs brigade of plonkers on me again.

If we’re talking now of the Mojacar walking group then I can assure you that they do not walk at the pace of the slowest member. In my recollection they have leaders who delight in setting a hot pace, stop for lunch and then set off again just when the slowest members are catching up. I can hold my own regarding pace, but I do not enjoy walking with a group of up to 70 people.

The Mojacar walking group disbanded about 18 months ago mainly due to covid and lack of leaders. I used to walk regularly with this group and did so for over 10 years. You are right that the group got too popular and groups of up to 60 or 70 were quite common. However, in all that time I never experienced anyone getting getting left behind because we always had a back marker. Clearly, your recollections are different to mine.

Pre Covid I used to walk with this group whenever I'd be in Mojacar. There was never 60/70 people walking (that's not to say that the group hadn't much more participants). It was a successful walking group and people appeared to like to be involved. In the year when we were allowed to travel due to the pandemic sometimes I'd show up at Los Arcos and some people would be there and we'd set off on a walk. Likely, we didn't know each other, but 30 mins later you'd think we knew each other since birth.

I have a few friends in Mojacar who enjoy walking too. Sometimes we'd meet up and walk (i) To the mobile phone masts behind Hotel Indalo, but we'd approach from the back road serving La Paratá and Mojacar Pueblo. It's easier than the climb at the Hotel Indalo end. (ii) There is another hilltop with masts behind the Pueblo, another interesting walk. (iii) Along the cliff walk to the beach in Macenas there are several spurs after the beach worth exploring or you can walk  to the tower at the headland or beyond if you wish.(iv) The mining area of Bédar is also an interesting walk. In fact, Bédar itself is worth the short drive. (v) East and West of Carboneras have some interesting "paths" and again are worth exploring. There's that awful eyesore of a hotel prevented for completion by Greenpeace.

I'm sure some looking in would like to share their walks and walking experiences near Mojacar. Please contribute as walking is a healthy pastime and many appear to want to explore.

It's obvious to us hard-chaws that you need trainers (minimum footwear), socks that come up over the ankle, water, backpack (handy), baseball cap, A high viz top is advisable particularly if walking on a public road. You don't need the "ski" poles, but they are handy and improve your image for photos. Bring your mobile phone too, just in case you get lost (unlikely). Usually, I bring a minimum first aid pack.

I look forward to any helpful posts on the subject. Oh! you don't have to be a good conversationalist, I can talk forever (as you might well know).

Hi there, apologies for jumping on an old post, but my husband and I have just arrived for 3 months and would also like to join a walking group, can you help?

We do have a dog though which may limit where we can walk

Any advice greatly appreciated!
