I post as best I can. I don't need a lesson on how to post. If you have to be informed that dumping mattresses in a public place is illegal there is not point in communicating with you. Most would have learnt this from around age 5.

Look at this in a different way. I probably saved you a fine from the Policía Local and from a lot of talk from your neighbours....

...

Matthew the reason that they have a bulk collection is just exactly to stop the illegal dumping of any furniture including mattresses many of which we found in the Rambla when we lived in Arboleas.  So the advice is check when they collect and place by the bins the night before.

Thankyou Alicia. I have checked and it is quite acceptable to do as you suggested.

I think you may have missed the point, Matthew.  The ayuntamiento set a date once or twice a month when they ask you to leave large items of rubbish, including mattresses, next to the bins, and they go equipped to remove them.  That isn't dumping, it is taking advantage of the service o...

...ffered for the safe and ecologically sound disposal of waste.  On Alicia's suggestion, Glynnson seems to be planning to check the date with his ayuntamiento so that he can do just that, so claiming to have saved him a fine from the Policia seems a little wide of the mark.

Thankyou psy1967, I'm glad to see you took the time to read and understand my question, unlike others. I have checked and it acceptable to do as Alicia suggested.

I was talking to some of my friends in Mojacar by phone over the weekend (including one Spaniard) and each informed me that it is  illegal to leave used mattresses for collection by the local authority. Each said the local authority (for a quiet life) would dump the mattresses. But the bottom line message I'm getting is that it is illegal to dump used mattresses expecting the local authority to redump.

I could add the opinions of the people I spoke with, but I'll save you their comments.

so the townhall's own web site stating that they will collect on the 2nd and 17th of each month bulk rubbish including Mattresses is not true then?  better that they are collected and disposed of correctly than left anywhere with no thought to the environment.

Leaving the aesthetics aside and also their relative attractiveness as bedding material for rodents, technological advances enable many of the components of a mattress to be recovered so, in growing numbers of municipalities mattresses are now recyclable. As we move towards a circular economy and net-zero, more items will be made to be recyclable or re-usable.
