Thank you em68. I don't know anything about Starling, but unfortunately I do not have a UK address, and Nationwide made me close my account (had it for about 20 years) when I gave them my Spanish address - said they were unable to let me hold a UK account if I didn't live there.

Alicia is correct - according to Nationwides own website, you are completely free to live abroad whilst maintaining your UK account … is it possible that it’s just one person or a particular branch that don’t understand their own regulations?

Too late for me now, it was the Head Office that informed of this when I phoned to query the reason why I had to close my account.

You are lucky. We moved here 3.5 years ago, and at the time only Barclays allowed me to keep my account  and now............ enough said!

Someone has sent me a very helpful private message regarding Wise, and recommending HSBC. Unfortunately, without wanting to appear rude, I do not reply to private messages unless I know the person who has sent it. Too many scams going around. However i will look @ HSBC with the information provided. Thank you

Thank you Maggie. Is this the HSBC Advance accouny?

Hi Jan, yes I think so.  We have been able to keep our HSBC account and when I checked with them it is all okay if you reside in Spain.  You will need to provide documentation for I D checks but easy to do.  You won't be able to apply for a Visa credit card unless already have one with them.  Good luck.
