Thanks all for very helpful advice.  I now know what to do! I’m not going to appeal against Ireland’s decision to reject me as it seems I have no grounds to appeal and in any case it seems all dealings with Irish passport office are painfully slow.  We are not ready for residency yet but in due course, when uk house is sold etc etc, we will apply and I now know I can apply as a spouse of EU resident.

I am now exploring what is involved in becoming a Spanish resident so any links to information that explain things clearly would be gratefully received.

I take it your northern Irish husband has an "Eire" passport then.

Hi, the easiest thing with the least hassle is to employ a Gestor, an expert in all the relevant paperwork. There are a number of them around and they are not too expensive. Anyone with an Irish passport gets a TIE residency card without the need for fingerprints etc. as they are an EU Citizen (I am) but he still needs to be registered with the Police and get an NIE Number, and you will also need to be registered, we all are. A simple process in which your Gestor will help. As to converting a driving Licence, that's another story at the moment, still to be sorted. Best of luck.

Rufus Hound thank you for taking the time to help in this way.  This is exactly the info I need.

And Bobbyweaf, I agree I should get a Gestor to help and I will do this, but I want to understand the process first.

Thanks again, all.

Hi June, no problem,

Im doing research on this myself and you are in a similar position as I can get an Irish passport and my wife will have a UK  passport and should be able to emigrate with me,  so let us know how you get on.

I have also found this guide on a legal site (not recommending them as I have had no dealing with them but the info is good) about EU citizens that have non EU spouses/children (ie UK)

Rufus Hound: thanks for further useful info.  I think when we have finished this process we will both be able to get work as Gestors!  Our own applications will not begin until we sell London home as I am led to believe that Spain would tax us for capital gains.  If I find any other useful websites I will pm you good luck!

June, It's none of my business, but do you think it wise to sell your home in the UK? If I were you I'd try renting for several months, at least.

Matthew: I was quite touched by your thoughtfully kind and wise advice. Worry not.  We are selling London home to downsize.  We will buy a small bolt hole in UK so if we get too decrepit we can return to Blighty to be nearer family. Like you, I think it would be ill-conceived to buy a property in Spain before renting some time in the area.
