Hi. Just read your reply to June. I would also like to know the process for getting my UK passport noted that I am the spouse of an EU/Irish passport holder. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Helen

Sorry Helen, I never got that far before my wife died.

I think the above gives the information you need.  You're not entitled to an Irish passport, but if your husband (who I presume has applied for or already got his Irish passport) goes to live in Spain you can join him, but after 90 days you will have to apply for a residence card.  I suggest a good read of the above, as there is a bit more to it, and maybe speak to the Spanish consulate.  Good luck!

Nettie99. Thank you for your response. I will read the information on the link you provided. I don't want to live or apply for residence status. Just wanted to know if I can stay more than the 90/180 days allowed for UK citizens. Helen

Endex.  I think yours is the answer I have been waiting for!  I am not misinformed just completely ignorant.  Who stamps my passport?  I have been googling but couldn’t see any info that matched your solution so if you have any pointers on where I can go to get information t...

Re the reply to you from Endex - I think Endex was not talking about appealing a passport refusal but that you can secure a TIE residence card that states that you are a spouse of an EU citizen (Ireland) - who is resident in Spain.

This will please Matthew.  I was turned down when I applied for an Irish Passport.  Everyone else in my family is either eligible for passport or already has one.  The basis of my application was that I was married to a Northern Irishman. When I was turned down, I grumbled a bit bu...

...t accepted the situation.  Now I find out you can appeal!  So I was wanting to hear from people who have appealed and hopefully appealed successfully.

Hello,

The first part is the important bit. Married to a Northern Irishman is the equivalent  of marrying a Yorkshireman or Londoner it is in the UK.

If your husband was a child of a Rep of Ireland parent then it is automatic he gets a passport. Semi automatic for grandchildren. Northern Ireland is a different thing altogether.

The Rep of Ireland became a separate entity a hundred years ago and remains firmly in the EU whilst Northern Ireland still  belongs to England

Residents in NI have been given separate rules as part of the Good Friday Agreement, in spirit at least this allows people who are living in NI and pro-Irish to become citizens of the Republic but is prone to abuse and therefore more stringent rules may be applied. As England has made it very clear to Europe that there is a growing gap between countries and in return the countries of the EU are making it clear in return. the English government will be no help nor will countries alienated by the attitudes of the present UK government?

What did your refusal notification say?

As far as I'm aware you're only eligible for an Irish passport if you have an Irish parent or grandparent, and as a grandchild you have to apply for your citizenship and pay a fee for foreign birth registration.  Being a spouse of an Irish citizen may give you certain advantages, such as the right to live with your spouse if he/she moves to Spain, but it doesn't entitle you to an Irish passport.  Not much point appealing I wouldn't have thought.  It's explained on www.dfa.ie/citizenship.  Unless, of course, someone on here knows otherwise ...

I’m married to an Irish passport holder, we both live in Ireland - I had to get mine through residency because being married to an Irish person does not qualify you- cost me €1300 all in but I now have the citizenship and the passport 👍

Hi, watching this thread with interest as I have Irish parents (I was born and live in uk with uk passport) and will be applying for an Irish passport  (also have a British wife, who can apply for Spanish residency by having a EU citizen as spouse.)

Hopefully it will be plain sailing as both of my parents were born in Eire and hold Irish passports and on the irish.gov site it states if that is the case then I am already classed as an irish citizen and can apply.

June - you havent stated if your husband has a UK (British) or Eire (Irish) passport - obviously one is still in the EU the other isnt.

Yes, plain sailing for you.  It does take a long time to get your passport, though, because of the volume of applicants (which must be extremely frustrating for those in Ireland), so I'd recommend starting the process asap. I got the ball rolling straight after the Brexit referendum.  My (Irish) mother couldn't see what the rush was for, but I'm so glad I applied when I did!
