In the UK there's no requirement to hide off radar, as you will be paid benefits, have your medical expenses paid and given a house courtesy of the tax payer for as long as you want!

Some people know what they know and don't bother with facts..................

I believe the phrase “hide off radar” in your original post lead many to believe you were talking about undocumented migrants or those who do not have sufficient right to legally reside in the UK.  Because of course social security, council houses etc are not available to that particular group of people

'NO NEED', I say again, 'No need to hide off radar'.

Very different from 'Hide off radar' in the context of my statement if you read it again, of which is absolutely correct and is a growing misfortune to the British taxpayer!!

Fair enough - I’m trying to understand what you are saying.  I get that you said there was “no need” to hide off radar; the misapprehension arose because those here hiding off radar are doing so because they are not legal, don’t have Residencia. Are, in effect “undocumented”

So if you’re legally in the UK, then of course there’s no need to hide, you are entitled to the services provided by social security.  If you’re NOT documented or a legal resident, then there very much is a need to to stay off the governments radar, yes? Otherwise quite apart from the fact you can’t access social support services, you risk deportation.

I will never understand the people who have lived here full time and not got thair documents in order. The 90day rule has been in force for years, & for those that left it late Sorry I have no sympathy for you whatsoever. Why did you not do it years ago? if you've lived in Spain for a number ...

...of years d

There are many who think their documents are in order, but for reasons usually unknown to them now find themselves in a position that they are now illegally living within the EU. Nobody knows how many people are in this situation, but I reckon there is much more than thought hitherto.

How many assume as I've my own car and pay car tax that I am legally entitled to live in Spain?

"We pay our SUMA, of course we're legally entitled to stay in Spain for as long as we wish."

How many think that their partner/spouse has looked after all the legal requirements and years ago?

In an unrelated topic I remember one lady screaming at our annual general meeting about the owners who didn't pay their community fees and were using the facilities of the urbanisation. She screamed that the transgressors should be "named and shamed" and banned from the garden and pool.  A newsletter was issued a couple of weeks later and her name was top of the list not having paid community fees in years. She assumed that "he" was looking after everything. "He" certainly was not.

I'd urge people to ask "him" for a peep at "our" papers. Otherwise, the next knock at the door might be from La Guardia Civíl issuing a one way ticket for the bus to Gibraltar.

I'm Irish and am somewhat sympathetic towards Brits who find themselves in such a position. I've lobbied our EU politicians for to extend the 90-day Limit and to offer "forgiveness" to illegal Brits in Spain. Therefore, I'm somewhat surprised to see Brits screwing Brits on this forum.

The "I thought he/she took care of it ages ago" reason might hold some water there Matthew and I am not unsympathetic towards that - HOWEVER ... the "I've paid <insert fee of choice> fee / tax therefore I'm legal" just doesn't hold up anymore.  After UK voted to leave, there was slowly growing momentum to advise Brits to get their papers in order.  It grew strongest in 2019 / 2020 with a huge amount of adverts by various organisations including HM Gov advising people exactly what was required to "regularise" their situation in Spain.  You'd have needed to be not so much "off the radar" as "out in a campo buried deep underground in a bunker with absolutely no electricity, internet, TV or any other forms of information apart from some dog-eared ancient Readers Digest" to have not had at least some idea that paying car tax and having an NIE did not make you "legal".

I can see that maybe more than a few may have become "confused", but I'm sorry Matthew, the vast majority I'd say just didn't want to pay Spanish tax on worldwide income so never bothered registering (and therefore never came up as being Tax Resident in Spain to either HMRC or Agencia Tributaria.)
