NOT all tap water is safe,if you boil it you can use for cooking/etc as has been said most villages have a 'fuente' that you can re-fill bottles from just look at the Spanish

supermarket bottled water is fine,BUT, if using for tea etc then you must empty the kettle every time and fill with fresh the same in the UK
...

...

ALL mains water supply in Spain as in all EU countries is checked, inspected and certified as potable and fit for human consumption. It’s just not that nice to drink.

Chris

yes tested every six months

more on water in Spain here

https://tappwater.co/en/spanish-tap-water-quality/

the OP will be living in the place full time so should not have so many problems,BUT,as we all know water 'outages' happen very often in Spain which means contaminants can enter the supply(the same in the UK)

also you may be on the mains but fed via a holding tank which can add risk

also water left standing in pipes especially in apartment blocks can easily be infected with Legionella so extra precautions should be used

Also, if ecological or health reasons are the issue for not wanting to buy bottled water, remember that you unfortunately cannot escape consuming microplastics as modern pipework is made out of a type of plastic!

If you’re anywhere near a fuente, by all means use it, OK you still have to carry your ‘own’ bottles but, maybe one at a time when you’re passing?

I live by a natural spring we’re most spanish get there water from ( they fill bottles ) I have used this but now signs have been out up ( drink at your own risk ) and I wondered why ? Well it’s Rats. There urine is dangerous and can give you weils disease ... so best to boil then put in fridge. Or buy a  filterized unit to filter water one that fits under your sink

We have a water filter fitted by Healthy H2O it doesn't cost a lot to have fitted and you can use the filter for up to a year depending on usage, they will then come out and change it or you can it yourself.  I use tap water for cooking but inly filtered water to drink. They advertise in Focus or look at their website.

Hi Agnete

We live off the grid in the campo so getting safe water has become a bit of a speciality of ours! Have a look at fitting a reverse osmosis filter system - this has a 5 filter system, with the last stage being a remineralising filter so the water tastes great and is really safe. We got ours from Leroy Merlín and paid around €200 - then it costs about €30 a year for new filters. Worth every penny. There are two versions - one with an electric pump so you get a better water flow or one without the pump (which we have because we just have solar panels and a wind turbine!). The kit comes with a tap which then becomes your ‘drinking water’ tap. If you’re not sure about fitting it I’m sure it would be fairly simple to get someone in to do it.

Facing the same conundrum, I took a sample of the water for testing at a place in Campohermoso which is not too far from me.  There may be others closer to you, but suspect the testing station may be there to meet demand from veg growers.  Cost me about 50€. That showed that the water was perfectly safe to drink but did have a rather higher amount of chlorine than I like. As it is desalinated in origin, ir was also lacking some of the minerals which give flavour to spring water etc. So I use the tap water for cleaning teeth and cooking things that are not going to absorb water, filtered water  through a jug for nearly everything else, except drinking straight when I use bottled water, as I don’t like the taste of the filtered stuff.  My use of plastic bottled water has collapsed, and I feel reasonably secure in what I am doing.  Mind you, if the water goes a mucky colour after occasional  problems with the water supply, I go back to bottled for a while

Hi, I have lived in Spain for five years as of next month.

I drink plain tap water all the time and happily have it in tea ( after all, I am British ! )

Due to having had throat cancer and chemo therapy back in 2005 which burnt out my saliva glands, I have to drink a lot, anything up to about 5 litres a day.

I fill 1/2 litre plastic bottles with tap water and put in the fridge.

That means I always have chilled water for at home and when out.

Saves me a fortune !

Having worked in catering for over 30 years in various cuisines, my taste buds have had to be exceptionally good, so I do feel I have the experience to make comments in this field.

The cheap bottled water from supermarkets tastes horrible.

Restaurants have decent tasting glass bottled water, but expensive. Bars tend to have plastic cheap water like the supermarket stuff.

I have never had sediment in my kettles, or staining or residue on washing up including glasses.

Occasionally, when running water, there is a chlorine smell, but which always disappears if you put it in a fridge overnight or whatever.

Note that I do have an 8 litre bottle of water for the occasions that the water is cut off due to pipe bursts or new properties being connected in the line. Happens virtually every year whenever there is flooding and the roads collapse a bit, breaching the pipework.

I have no out ward signs of any trouble drinking tap water, other than my wooden leg tends to rot, my toe and finger nails go green,  I cannot get my glass eye to shine enough when washing it and my hair tends to fall out in chunks. So, no need to worry is there?

Drink up and be merry.
