Sriley, thank you, that was really helpful!

If this happens I’m hoping just one of us could fly back to post and recurve back the passports, as we will have brought our dog out initially, is it something just one of a couple could do?

Good luck with starting your new life in the Sun! ☀️

Unfortunately you can't as you need to have your visa stamped when you enter spain. Once stamped you have 1 month to apply for TIE. We are lucky to have relatives that were able to look after the dogs for us.

TIE? Oh no, ok so think we need to stay in the UK until we have the visas .

Thank you

Our application was June 2021 in London. We were given the option to leave or keep the passport. We kept it. Process took 3 weeks from the London Consulate visit to approval. Passport taken ftom us on second visit and Visa put in. Been plain sailing ever since having just got our 2 year renewal in Almeria this week.

My friend done her visa and I'm sure you have a option to keep it.  And when the visa is ready when you go back its then the visa us put into passport.  Best best is ring consulate and ask the question.

It says quite clearly on the Spanish Consulate website that passports are retained while the visa application is processed, you do not have the choice of taking it away and returning with it to collect your visa.

I can’t understand this because I wrote to the Spanish Embassy in London and they said that our passports would have to be left at the Embassy while the visa application was processed.
If they have changed this it would be great because while they have it we would not be able to visit our apartment in Mojácar.

Please don't stress it really is that bad when you get there. Firstly you visit the Spanish Consulate in London not the embassy. We were told the same as you, passport will be kept, can take 3 months. Passport wasn't kept and visa took 3 weeks. Go as though it will be kept hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised.

It'll all be worth it in the end.

It may say it but it doesn't mean they do it. We did it June 2021 and kept the passport along with others we know.
