Unfortunately you can't as you need to have your visa stamped when you enter spain. Once stamped you have 1 month to apply for TIE. We are lucky to have relatives that were able to look after the dogs for us.

My friend done her visa and I'm sure you have a option to keep it.  And when the visa is ready when you go back its then the visa us put into passport.  Best best is ring consulate and ask the question.

It says quite clearly on the Spanish Consulate website that passports are retained while the visa application is processed, you do not have the choice of taking it away and returning with it to collect your visa.
