Thanks for all the replies, we have now decided to ditched our dream, it seems that there are too many obstacles in the way now, so have decided that we will buy a motor home and tour the continent, absolutely gutted about the latest set of rules, Brexit and COVID have had there parts to play, bu...

...t hey you never know, Spain and the Uk may come to some form of agreement in the future.

If you ask me, if they stick to this tack, they will only reduce the amount of income that the Brits put into there economy and suffer as a result.

“absolutely gutted about the latest set of rules, Brexit and COVID have had there parts to play, “.         Lol,   Well at least you weren’t to blame for Covid haha.

Always wanted to buy a nice motor home and do what you plan too, being free and easy means you can roam to you're hearts content yet stay a while according to local rules and guidelines. Good luck in/with you're revised aspirations.

Many thanks for that, it's not my ideal, but trying make good something out of what looks like a bad job at the moment, and as you state, it does give us the opportunity of going to various places.

Well. I see you don’t have anything to say about it.  That’s fine.you might like this.  Better than Turkey maybe.   BTW,   We are going to buy a motorhome too.    I found this tonight part of an article in the telegraph.  The important bit.   It’s talking about people like us in Greece ,they feel as bad as us.     I don’t fancy speaking Portuguese but it’s better than not being allowed to spend 180 days in a row in our Spanish house and If the Portuguese government can do it , why can’t Spain?

The question has to be ... why SHOULD Spain?  It is a myth that the £ is the only thing propping up Spain’s economy, spread by those who desperately want to be needed by Spain.

Spain I understand derives a proportion of its overseas capital from tourism, and post Brexit, that’s not really going to change.  Having seen the way some of our countrymen berate and belittle Spanish authorities etc on Facebook (I speak here of the N332 page in particular), I could understand if Spain was actually looking forward to having less English here.

I know that SOME Spanish feel their culture and indeed their language is being eroded under a bombardment of Britishness, and whilst speaking English is certainly valued ... being English, not so much.

There will be many who tell of how they have Spanish friends and notice no animosity; hardly surprising, they have integrated, made the effort ... there are many others though who will speak of “arrogant” and “abrupt” Spanish people (perhaps through not really understanding the culture?) and who will tell of Spanish who will just refuse to understand or speak English ... and if the effort is not being made for them, why should they make the effort?  As I’ve said before, Spain has 4 official languages ... English isn’t one of them.

So really, if some of the people who come don’t wish to make the effort to integrate, why should Spain make any special arrangements to allow more?

Each country has its own migration laws and rules (it’s called “Sovereignty” - tip for Brexiteers). Portugal’s obviously differ to Spain’s, but don’t expect Spain to be in any rush to change their migration laws.

Still would vote the same way in reality, one door shuts, another opens in my eyes, with potentially greater opportunities, one never knows.

Just had a look at residency requirements for Portugal; their marketing line is that they are saying “Brelcome” to British prospective migrants, with English spoken as a second language by up to 50% of the population and a 10 year tax break for new migrants; permanent residency OR citizenship after 5 years (provided you pass a basic Portuguese test) ... it seems quite attractive!

If you’re reasonably well off, the Golden Visa can be had for an investment of as “little” as 280.000 € ... other financial requirement are lower :

  • Proof that the applicant has adequate accommodation;
  • Proof of health insurance coverage;
  • Document providing the amount of pension

OR

  • Proof that you have income that allows you to live in Portugal.To be eligible, you must have income or pensions amounting for 12 months: €7.200 for the first adult; €3.600 for second or more adults; €2.160 per children. You must provide 6-months of bank statements.

I didn t need a lecture. I’m not Desperate for Spain to want me lol.   In fact since this is all happening I would not miss Spain at all.    I  Didn’t say ANYTHING AT ALL this time about them needling the U.K. (pound.was that someone else’s post you were replying to  )         I’ve invested a lot of money in Spain.  As have a lot of people.  My point was as simple as I said.   You say.  “Why should they.” I say why shouldn’t they.   Maybe better if we all , obviously people in my position not yours, sold in Spain and moved to where we are welcome.  Portugal.  Lovely weather there too 😎.    I couldn’t find the bit about a Portuguese Test .  So the money side of things as regards pension amounts to live on is much more reasonable for people and maybe they should go to Portugal. So to obtain a  ⭐️Golden Visa    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Only €280,000 needed to be invested In an older house for refurb in the Algarve. Probably the house Victor was staying in for his hols 😎.   . Sounds very good.    My friend Saul Davies of “James” has residency there now so I must ask him. So you think The Spanish government will put some of the English peoples lack of integration into their culture before the money that,  like it or not,as you’ve mentioned it , the Brits do bring in. I’m looking forward to seeing exactly what the Spanish do next year lol but not worried either way.  Oh and silly me. I wasn’t talking about Residency anyway lol.  Just 180 days in a row per year. 🙄

If you want to know what the Spanish will do next year, take a look at the current Third Country National requirements.  It’s not going to change.

Spain is not going to bend over backwards for the Brits. Anyone who thinks that Brits are so important to Spain, that they are going to make special arrangements is still living in fantasy land.

L181SKY, whilst you may not have been talking about Residency, if you want more than 90 days consecutively, then that’s your only option.  As a Third Country National, Schengen rules prohibit a stay of longer than 90 days ... just because Portugal has cheaper and more favorable migration laws doesn’t mean as a TCN you can get round the 90 day Schengen rule.  You want to spend 180 days in a row in Portugal or Spain or France or anywhere else in the Schengen? You have to migrate. End of story. And even then, you will be bound by that countries requirements of continuous residency to maintain the visa.

You. Cannot. Do. 180 days in a row. After December 31st. As a tourist. Anywhere in Europe (That’s in the Schengen Zone).
