The question has to be ... why SHOULD Spain? It is a myth that the £ is the only thing propping up Spain’s economy, spread by those who desperately want to be needed by Spain.
Spain I understand derives a proportion of its overseas capital from tourism, and post Brexit, that’s not really going to change. Having seen the way some of our countrymen berate and belittle Spanish authorities etc on Facebook (I speak here of the N332 page in particular), I could understand if Spain was actually looking forward to having less English here.
I know that SOME Spanish feel their culture and indeed their language is being eroded under a bombardment of Britishness, and whilst speaking English is certainly valued ... being English, not so much.
There will be many who tell of how they have Spanish friends and notice no animosity; hardly surprising, they have integrated, made the effort ... there are many others though who will speak of “arrogant” and “abrupt” Spanish people (perhaps through not really understanding the culture?) and who will tell of Spanish who will just refuse to understand or speak English ... and if the effort is not being made for them, why should they make the effort? As I’ve said before, Spain has 4 official languages ... English isn’t one of them.
So really, if some of the people who come don’t wish to make the effort to integrate, why should Spain make any special arrangements to allow more?
Each country has its own migration laws and rules (it’s called “Sovereignty” - tip for Brexiteers). Portugal’s obviously differ to Spain’s, but don’t expect Spain to be in any rush to change their migration laws.
