We are considering purchasing a forever home in Spain next year and in reading on one site it states that each individual must have an income of at least 10,000 pounds/ euros per year, is this correct.? All advice welcome, many thanks Gary and Di

As it currently stands, after the end of this year, U.K. Nationals will become what are referred to in Spanish immigration terms as third country nationals. Effectively, this means that uk passport holders will be treated exactly the same as say North Americans or Canadians.

To immigrate as retirees (referred to as non lucrative status) you would need comprehensive health insurance plus currently around €26k per annum for a single person, or €32k for a couple.

The best way to get an insight into how this works is to google Canadian moving to Spain or something similar. I've attached a link, but the figures might be slightly out of date as they are calculated each year.

Sorry not to have better news for you

From January 1st you have to apply for residency as a non-EU citizen and the requirements are far higher. I believe it is a minimum of 26000 per annum  for the first applicant and a further 6000 per dependant. For unmarried couples it will be 26000 each. I recommend you seek advice from a reputable gestor or solicitor regarding residency and accountant regarding taxation as there are lots of issues you will need to take into account.

This may help; I wrote out a guide giving the most common visa classes you’d encounter and what’s required to get them, including the financial requirement and how it is calculated.  Check here for a full explanation : Guide to Visas for long-term residency post 31/12/2020

Thanks for all the replies, we have now decided to ditched our dream, it seems that there are too many obstacles in the way now, so have decided that we will buy a motor home and tour the continent, absolutely gutted about the latest set of rules, Brexit and COVID have had there parts to play, but hey you never know, Spain and the Uk may come to some form of agreement in the future.

If you ask me, if they stick to this tack, they will only reduce the amount of income that the Brits put into there economy and suffer as a result.

...t hey you never know, Spain and the Uk may come to some form of agreement in the future.

The majority of the money Brits put into the economy comes from tourism.  That won’t change.

With regards the motor home, please remember that you may only stay in the Schengen zone for a maximum period of 90 days, before being obliged to leave for an equivalent period.  Your clock starts running the second you cross into the Schengen zone - i.e. the majority of the EU countries.  Overstaying in the Schengen as a Third Country National can lead to heavy fines and being banned from re-entry into the Schengen zone for a period.

If you are planning on touring Europe and spend less than 90 days in Europe, I strongly suggest using an online Schengen Calculator! to see how much longer you are able to spend, and what the earliest date of re-entry is.

It is possible that at some point in the future, further discussions will take place between UK and EU on movement of people, but don’t hold your breath.  The regulations now governing migrating to Spain are just as tough as other countries in the EU.  UK won’t come to a “special arrangement” with Spain because the negotiation would have to be with the EU, not just one of its member States.  the rules regarding migrating to Spain - and in fact the EU - are more or less inline with UK’s new immigration law.  Unless that is changed radically with regards EU citizens, there will be no softening of migration rules for UK nationals into EU countries.
Sorry to shoot that down in flames.

And as long as the clauses within the Internal Markets Bill that breach international law remain, not only will there be no trade deal, there will also be no chance whatsoever of any discussion at all on further movement of people.

Would the same rules be applicable if you were to have an home there and just did a 3 month visit and return back to England for three months and not break the 90 days in 180?

Thanks

Gary
