Hello everybody.
I have a rather big dog (Labrador mix) that is very friendly to people and other dogs. He likes to be outside, and I have a rather big garden, front and back of the house. When he is outside, he very seldom barks. At the back, there is a unhardened road, that stops behind my h...

...ouse. Now and then people walk there, and when they have a dog, mine barks, but that doesn't happen very often.
My house is in a hamlet, so no passing traffic.
So, now here is the problem. I have two neighbours, a Spanish family on one side, and an English couple to the other side. Last Saturday morning I was in town, and I got a WhatsApp message that my dog barked to much. At 11 in the morning mind you.! Guess from whom.... the Spanish family.
The English couple assured me that it was only minimal.
At night, the dog is always inside.
I don't want trouble with my neighbours, so I want to show them the a copy of the law about dogs, and ask to be a bit understanding.
I've heard somewhere that you can not keep a dog from barking, unless in the night hours. (I believe from 10PM). Anybody has a link to that law?
Since I want to live in peace with my neighbours I would show them that law, and ask for a little understanding.
Kind regards to everyone (from me an the dog)

Only yesterday I had to have a civil conversation with my Spanish neighbor; To tell him every time they leave the house his dog barks constantly. He thanked me because he had been told previously by a near neighbor. So he is going to try a new anti bark collar and assured me if that didn’t work he would leave the dog in doors when ever they leave the house. So job done they are a lovely family and I want to get a long with them.In fact this is how he discribed me as being a good neighbor. So maybe go down that route and talk first I am sure your neighbor has better things to do than sending text messages.Hope you can sort it.

Hi, Its a difficult subject. Some people are more sensitive to barking dogs whilst others just don't notice them. I think you have two problems; a dog that barks when you are out, and a neighbor that doesn't like it barking too often.

If I may suggest, showing printed law to a neighbor isn't going to help too much and may just alienate them further. Its like saying to them 'I have the right to annoy you and there is nothing you can do about it' ...

...

If you can find out what causes your dog to bark you may then be able to find a way to pacify the dog. Do you leave it outside when you are out? Can it be left inside? Try leaving it inside with the tv or radio on to distract it from outside noises that may upset it. Close shutters or curtains if it is disturbed by movement outside. It may suffer from separation anxiety and barks because it simply wants you back. This is more difficult to prevent.

We have a dog and unfortunately we seldom leave it alone. This does restrict what and where we can go, for example, if we go shopping one of us remains in the car with him. Non dog friendly hotels and restaurants are out of bounds for us, and visiting other non dog friendly locations only happen if we can arrange for a dog sitter.

You may already do all these and have my sympathy. Hope you are able to get it resolved soon.

Lots of good suggestions.  Also could he be left in a room where the neighbours are less likely to hear any barking.  Maybe go around with some flowers and apologise and tell them of what you will try to do in order to minimise any barking when you are out. Maybe they are having a siesta when the barking occurs?

I hope no one uses an anti bark collar on their dog, it works by giving the dogs a mild electric shock to the throat. in my opinion this is cruel.

Why is everyone, so hell bent on creeping up the bottom  and bending over backwards to accommodate  their Spanish neighbour, If I understand the situation correctly this dogs barks when Polowonder goes shopping, so how many times a week is this once or twice and for what 1 or 2 hrs. and the English neighbours the other side say the dog is not a problem. So this tells me its nothing to do with the barking its Spanish being bloody minded, I have been here a long time, and there are nice Spanish and bloody minded Spanish, just like in the UK.  Sounds to me this neighbour is being awkward because you are English. If it was me I would leave the dog in doors where any sound would be muffled. and then tell the Spanish neighbour to go whistle. if he complains.

I use an anti bark collar, but it doesn't give a shock (I think they are even forbidden in Spain), but it gives an ultra sound, not audible for humans, but annoying to dogs.
He was wearing it, but I think the battery is dead.

But, at 11Am on a Saturday????

I didn't answer the message, but it's not the man (I am a client of his) but the lady.

.. . . . . and said by Jenni who wants the Aintree Grand National banned. I saw no sign of any protesters in the Vera bullringrecently where live and death bullfighting was going on.. And I wish Jenni would get her facts right about the anti barking dog collar.

Hi I have been looking at various parts of Spain to retire to and we have stayed for one week in each place

Ameria

Andalucia

Alicante

Each place had dogs barking all the time throughout the night it was terrible  so get used to it it's not going to stop

Sadly it's putting us off retiring to Spain

Leave the country out of it the whole idea of these forums is not to discriminate with third world countries

Hi - I thought that the suggestion of an apology and a bunch of flowers was a good one - and personally, I would ask them to record your dog barking - then you will have a true picture of how it sounds. It clearly barks more when you’re not there, as otherwise your Spanish neighbour would have texted you before, but it would be helpful for you to know how much and how long, as your English neighbour might have a higher tolerance. Or your Spanish neighbour might be talking to it and it might be prompting it to bark.  Good luck!!!

Another way, assuming you have wifi, a €25 security camera with sound system will enable you to see and talk to your dog from your phone, when your out shopping and you can then generally calm him down.

I have a friend with a large (loud) dog, who would only bark when they were out, they do that. Happy dog, happy neighbours.
