Pitstop,

Can I recommend using Alphonso at Zar 2010 in Garrucha.A really good honest guy and that seems to be a rarerity in the Costa Almeria area..He will give you lots of good advice and isn't pushy and desperate for a sale like some of the agents I have come across in my 20 years in Espana....

The original poster asked a very simple question, how come the thread turned into a slagging match against Biggles. Yes Biggles has become a controversial character over the years, but never the less is entitled to his opinion. He gave his opinion of the Spain he endured, he did not attack any of you personally, so why did you attack him personally. shame on you.

Thanks for your comments Jenni.Guess I should be used to being slagged off as some of these people always seem to do.I suppose. they are bored out of their little minds and need to do something to pass the day!!  I just wanted to say that Costa Almeria isn't the ideal paradise that some people think it is. Maybe if you are part of the " in crowd" it might be ...as long as they all stick together and don't bother to integrate with the locals..Guess I started off wrongly by having the Mustang.I think people erroneosly perceived that I was showing off, that was never the case.I saw one on the TV series the Grand Tour,I had the money so I bought one! Six years of hell later I am away from Spain forever and very happy that I never need to go anywhere near the country ever again 🙁👍

Well there may of course be reasons you "hate" Spain, so why are you still on a Spanish forum - just to troll ??

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are interested in moving to Albox from Scotland, initially as a frequent holiday home then hopefully permanently if we can get through the visa system, we are in our early 40’s and kid free ( all grown up now) and we are looking to change our lifestyle. We love Spain and the t...

My question is , does anyone here live in Albox or know of Albox what it’s like as a town for foreigners to relocate? We are learning Spanish so we can be part of the community. Any information would be appreciated.

I have an Albox question. Is there anyway to get to Albox by bus. Is there a regular bus service going anywhere, to or from Albox. Or is it a Motown only;-)

Biggles old son . I’ve had banter with you in the past and unfortunately been in the same bar as you on a couple of occasions. You do seem to upset folk . First time was in Carrigans where you would insist on going to your Saab/Vauxhall cavalier to get paintings or photos of your plane and was politely asked to leave and if you didn’t want to ever come back it wouldn’t be a great loss . Then at the opening of Ankara this year you were rude to bar staff because you had a table chair at the bar and then they ignored you because you were being obnoxious shouting . Apparently barred from quite a few of the other bars in mojacar . It’s not always everyone else that is wrong . Chill fella. I just hope you settle in the phillipines. Big question for me what’s happened to your dogs ??    Hi Pitstop , getting back to your post . Lots of sound advice on this forum. Like everything pick out the best bits . Visit the area as often as possible and at different times of the year . What a great age to start a new chapter in your lives . All I can say is that if I had been in your position at your age and had the nerve I wish I had done it . Hope it all goes well .

And only a 13 hour flight from the UK to the Philippines!! Good call Biggles!!

Don’t take any notice of him, Pitstop. He was in Palomares, where the Americans accidentally dropped a nuke in the 60s! The fallout has obviously affected his rationale!

We moved to Albox 18 months ago and love it! The only downsides are the Spanish bureaucracy and the English tradesmen. You can’t avoid the first, but you would be well advised to avoid the second!

There is a complete ban on building on ‘rural’ land, which is any land outside the town centre. This mean that all the ‘villa’ type houses are about 20 years old and were built illegally. Some have been legalised but many have not and the process of legalisation is very long and (perhaps deliberately) difficult and expensive.

I would advise that you go for an old ‘cortijo’ type property, with small windows and thick walls. While these are not as ‘pretty’ as the villas, they are usually legal. Also they are cool in summer and warm in winter.

It does get cold in winter- not in a Scottish way- but despite being here only 18 months, we seem to have acclimatised and now reach for the hats gloves & woolly jumpers when the temperature dips below 20 degrees!

Almeria is supposed to be the driest part of Spain, but global warming may be changing that! Last year we had rain almost every day in March and the first 2 weeks of April. The rain was from the Sahara and contained a lot of it! The clean-up operation was long and arduous.

This year, March & April were dry, but it has rained for the last 2/3 weeks and is forecast to do so until the second week of June.
We’ve been coming to Albox for the first 2 weeks of June since 2016 and have never had any rain!

All that being said, I wouldn’t move back to the UK and wouldn’t even contemplate moving to the Philippines! A bit more global warming will make most of The Philippines disappear beneath the rising sea-level!

I wish you good luck and would certainly recommend that you visit at different times of the year to get a proper feel for Spain. Also bear in mind that if Scotland vote to come out of the UK and are subsequently allowed back in to the EU, it would make your move much, much easier! ( I know there’s some big IFS there!)

All the best,

Stephen

Hi

we have a villa in Albox on rural land which built 20 years ago and is all perfectly  legal,  a large majority are.   Some were definitely built illegally but don’t let this reduce your options.  Just get a good solicitor
