Hi, yes you will need an NIE number to open a bank account. Quit a few of the banks in and around the Albox area have English speaking staff so if you find your local one doesn't then head to another branch. I personally use Cajamar, opened mine in Oria and the chap in there speaks no or little English but he was fantastic. If need assistance in English I head into one of the Albox branches, the one near the donkey as couple in there speak English and very helpful. I use their online service called "Wefferent" which is free online banking if you don't use a counter to do a transaction in branch, they have cash machines where you can scan and pay a bill, deposit money etc. and that keeps banking free of charge but of course if need help from inside that is still free too! Hope of some help to you, am sure others will recommend their own banks.

We were still in UK and had a solicitor in Spain obtain our NIE's, he also opened a bank account for us amongst other things. You can also give power of attorney so solicitor can do things on your behalf saving on trips out to sign things. We sourced a solicitor on one of our property hunting trips.

We were hoping to look at property this year before the Coronavirus hit. Following numerous recommendations on this forum we opened a non-resident bank account with Sabadell. Very helpful English speaking staff, website in English and forms in English too. We did it all online and were even sent direct debit cards !
All that was left to do was to verify our identity with the nearest branch in Vera when we were to come in March .......
The good thing about this bank is that when you become resident you can transfer your account to a resident’s bank account.
Kind Regards
Marie
