Hi Jenny

You pay quarterly for rubbish collection and an annual tax which is like council tax only its a fraction of the cost! The previous owner will be liable for this years bill due in September so we won’t get our first bill till sept 2020 - not quite sure why but I wasn’t going to argue!! We think it was about €40 or something daft like that.

The cost of living here is low - don’t panic about these bills. When it comes to renovating you need to seek advice (whoever you use will know) as for certain types of work you have to apply for major or minor works licence - although I’m getting the impression that a lot of people ignore this and just go for it!

Personally, I would choose a house / flat over a mobile home - we camped for just over 3 months while we were looking for somewhere and heard some horror stories about living in those and the sorts of sites they’re on. If you live in the village you’ll find the locals very friendly and welcoming with a proper community feel. I would only go for a mobile home if you want to live in ‘little england’ rather than real Spain.

I’m hoping once we get out there in a couple of weeks time and get to meet Danny things will become clearer reading all the internet advise although helpful makes it’s all sound so complicated. I will be armed with a whole list of questions.

As non residents we have to also pay imputed income tax they assume we can rent the property out so you are taxed again!

We found it all a little confusing which is why it’s so important to have a bi lingual solicitor. If you fancy meeting up for a coffee when you’re here give us a shout - we live just 1km out if the village centre in the campo

Hi Nigel,

Did everything go smoothly and was all paperwork in place? This is my biggest worry.

Congratulations! Are you here in Illar at the moment? We saw a very British looking person last night when we popped in to do a bin run!

Hi Jenny

Yes everything went reasonably smoothly, the bank took their time and paperwork appears to be ok

so we're very happy.

Hope all goes ok for you
