Thankyou Sue,

I have the metal streamers, fly curtains and net screens on all 12 windows thank goodness!

I will certainly buy the electric pest unit from Leroy Merlin.

I too am spraying and seem to be having positive results with tea tree oil but will try lavender as an addition to my armoury.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Good wishes

Sian

Hi Sian I have also seen on facebook about hanging up clear zip filled bags of water with coins placed in them.  A few people have said they have found this to work as well. Another which is not so appealing is a sealable container with holes in it containing some form of sweet sticky syrup and a piece of hot dog. Draws the flies in and then they can't get out because of the sticky ness of their wings.  Hope all goes well for you in your future endeavors.

The bags of water with coins in could well work - clear water and sparkly coins.  Flies have compound eyes and the refraction of light through the water makes it difficult for them to navigate (it’s why the silver strips work) - anything that reflects or refracts light, placed in an area where there IS light to reflect or refract should keep flies away.

I hate flies too. Im not an expert but feel like airing my droning voice anyway on the subject.

Firstly I on a property in Garrucha and so far the flies seem put off by the constant breeze that runs up the hill there. Thats no good for you except I think its a hint as to what flies do not like- wind!

You can only do all the things that are conventional. Put nets or meshes over your windows, use shop proprietary scents that are supposed to deter them. Try and establish what time of the day theyre active, and if you have one- turn your air con on to make it as cold as possible. Buy those electrocuting ulta violet lights and hang them outside the house (They get attracted to the light so you don't really want them in the home). Light a barbeque and make it smoke slowly. Light insence sticks. (Don't know how but (encourage birds to fly and live around your house (They eat the things) , any standing water nearby that you can fill in with soil to reduce their spawning grounds. Even drop a bit of oil onto open water to suffocate them. Make a sport out of them by buying those electrocuting fly swats. Its so much more satisfying to hear them pop and they get killed. Sometimes the oils they sell there in general stores can deter them if you drop some at doors and windows.

Borrow the USA's star wars defense systems.

Not sure the standing water advice applies to flies - mosquito larvae hatch in water and standing water is a huge problem for mosquitoes ... but not flies. Flies are not keen on water......

Having fans, or a method of generating airflow is good advice though; that also helps. It won’t keep the flies away completely because the pesky little blighters are quite intrepid on occasion, but using a multitude of differing methods could help convince the little sods to go infest somewhere else ....

Hi, ive just read your posts and although I dont live in Spain, I live in Bulgaria....and we have the same problem with flies........we buy a small bottle of something called Fendona....and we dilute it and put it in a spray pump.............we spray the outside of our house, the gazebo and any walls around with it.............this kills flies instantly that they land on any surface .......I suggest you read the link ive put on at the end to make sure this is right for where you live. https://www.pestcontrol.basf.co.za/en/Products/Overview/Fendona%C2%AE-6-SC.html

My concern with insecticide is that it will also kill bees...and that renders its use totally unacceptable.

Thankyou Skyward!

Thankfully my house is fully protected by fly screens.

The garden where I hoped my guests could experience the peace tranquility and beauty is another matter... when working in the garden   I can have 20 to 30 flies land on me at one time so it’s anything but relaxing and will adversely affect my Yoga and rental business.

The wind makes a huge difference you are right.. though as my garden is enclosed by high walls they seem to shelter in it and are protected from the wind.

I am taking a multi dimensional approach and hope things will improve soon.

Thanks again

Si
