Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to you all as where I live I am overwhelmed and overrun with flies by the thousands.

Has anyone got a solution? I am desperate.

I have used fly traps and I am washing and disinfecting paths patios and gravel twice daily to no avail.

I live in the middle of an agricultural area in between Villaricos and Las Herrerías this being the main problem I think after the subsequent melon harvest the fly problem has escalated to a horrendous scale it’s now impossible to sit outside. Even getting into the car is a mad dash from the front door to the car door to avoid the flies penetrating the house or car.( I have fly screens on all doors and windows)

This wouldn’t be such an issue as it’s a temporary seasonal thing but I intend to rent part of my property out to the tourist market and I have invested 10’s of 1000’s in making it desirable and rentable.... the only fly in the ointment (pardon the pun) is the flies 😢

Is it worth getting in pest control?

Is there such a thing here?

Is there a machine that zaps and kills the blighters?

Not sure what else I can do other than put my property on the market and I really really don’t want to even think of that prospect as I love it here ...but if I can’t make it a viable business because of the flies I may have no choice.

Thankyou in advance for any help and suggestions.

Siân 🌺

Hola;

I’m not sure there is much else that you can do at this time of year. Melon time is fly time, especially in the campo where I also live; I get attacked by flies even when putting out the washing! it’s as though they are searching for water.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Thankyou Jeanne58,

I’m getting used to making a mad frantic dash to the car from my front door to avoid their attacks.

Do you have experience of how long it will last? I’ve noticed they’ve started ploughing the fields ready for re planting will it all calm down once they’ve finished.?

Thanks for your response

Good wishes Si

It is mainly during the planting season. I think part of the problem is after the picking, followed by the goats, and finally the rotting fruit. Flies are a nuisance here, as well as other parts of the region, mainly due to the agricultural land that surrounds us. At the end of the day, it boils down to living ‘in the campo’. Let’s hope your guests will enjoy the positives life here has to offer, and not be put off by the seasonal influx of flies. The other choice you have is to invite guests outside of the melon season, which is still warm and lovely.

Good luck

Yes Jeanne58 is right.  Off season is better. I feel SO lucky, having bought in the campo 16 years ago not even advised about the flies. We bought in the hills not farmland around Bedar and Serena .  We are there on and off October till June and are not bothered by flies at least no more than we get in U.K.    it’s a shame no one told you .  You will do well if you sell it on the winter ,get away from the Cold idea.

Thankyou for your lovely positive replies.

I too wake up every morning filled with gratitude I found this place. I absolutely love it and feel so blessed.

I believe there’s a solution to every problem so I will find a way to manage the fly issues but until then it will limit my rental income and also my Yoga teaching as I like to teach in my garden sadly it’s impossible at the moment.

I’ve also decided to speak to the Town Hall and Agriculture company near me to see if their activities can be tweaked to lessen the flies and ask if I may place fly traps on the land that boarders my property.( horrible smelly things but very effective) I prefer to discourage rather than kill but as yet haven’t found a magic herb that will send them packing.

I hope with a proactive multi dimensional approach.

I’ll make a difference 😃

On Amazon(in England, don't know about Spain) you can buy hats with netting from the brim to your shoulders - at least it keeps them off your face...

Hi Sian we are not plagued by flies but still get them as you do. We have found that using metal streamers on the doors seem to deter so many coming in. Not cheap and you have to make them up yourself.

Also we plug in an electronic pest unit which we purchased from Leroy Merlin, it does appear to off cut down the amount of flies that enter through the doors, which are always open as we have dogs.

I also mist the property with lavender this seems to help as well. Check out some of the other oils ie bergamot and lemon grass, citronella they are pretty good too.

Best  Regards Sue
