A few months ago, people driving UK registered vehicles were having difficulty when asked to produce their driving licences.
It was reported that the various Spanish police were saying UK licences were not valid in Spain and drivers in that position should be holding IDPs.
Has the position changed and the police been advised of the law, or should I be sure to have IDP's?

Like everything in Spain, different officials tend to interpret the law differently. UK licences ARE valid for tourists, that is the government position. However that information may not have fully filtered down to the Guardia Civil / Policia Local in some / many of the smaller towns.
It’s not going to hurt having an IDP for Spain; at best you won’t need it … but if you encounter that one official who believes you do, you’ve saved yourself the time, expense and anxiety of fighting a fine that shouldn’t have been issued.

For the sake of £5.50 and a passport sized photo it may be worth your while. Should you be one of those people who still have an old paper licence rather than a photocard one an IDP is necessary.
Also if you are going down the IDP route and driving from the UK through France the one for France is different. Don't you just love bureaucracy 🙄🙄
