This is exactly what happened to my mum a couple of years ago and she'd held a bank account with them for years...she wanted to withdraw some cash and they said because she hadn't used the account for ages she needed to show them what you did....we were in the process of trying to buy another property so she had to fly back to England and get the relevant paperwork. ...what a pain...
You got away lightly - you should have been asked for your NIE details also.
similar situation in uk all to do with money laundering proof of where your money is coming from.

I have a non resident account with Unicaja, to open it I had to produce my NIE, Passport, occupational pension advice slip, evidence of state pension, P60 I still pay tax in UK and I also had my rental agreement at hand. Just recently I thought about changing to Cajamar bank, so I paid them a visit. They wanted the same information.

I opened my account with Sabadell in 2014 from overseas, via email with just a passport .....
... just sayin’
Hello All,
Just for the record, last summer our Spanish Bank Account was "frozen" because we didn't have a NIE number. Believe me, you don't need your bank account frozen while waiting 2 months for your NIE to come through. Get your NIE.
The down-shot of mine:- I'm still trying to convince the water, electricity, refuse companies that I am an honest citizen of the EU. The damage done to us by that stupid assistant bank manager who didn't ring or email me beforehand was not good. I had to travel to the Spanish embassy in Dublin having waited weeks for an appointment. Then I had to go to Spain, rent a car to travel to the utility providers. The only explanation I received from the bank manager was:- "We were following Spanish Law."

If it was a non residents account Matthew, how was it Spanish Law?
If it was a residents account, well yes - but then you need to show Residencia / NIE to get a residents account in the first place.
I fear you encountered one of those who were not entirely aware of the actual law .... unless of course the law has been changed recently to require non-residents to have NIE?

You're right Dario. This law was quoted to me by the bank manager.
