I'd be very interested in hearing comments from anyone who's used the mobile veterinary service here in Almería province.

I have an elderly dog who's showing disturbing symptoms and would prefer not to have to inflict on him a car journey to see his regular Vet.  He is a very bad traveller and with the heat etc. I would rather not put him through the ordeal.

No.  So far nobody has replied to my question.

Luckily after two worrying days when he couldn't settle and was obviously in pain, my dog recovered and began to eat.  I think he must have eaten something rotten in the campo or even on our land.  There are plenty of rabbits and sometimes he's picked up dismembered decaying heads or limbs!  As he's 14 and car journeys are traumatic for him, I might need a mobile vet at some point.  The drawback is that they can't X-ray and neither can Eduardo in Sorbas if anything internal needs checking or even a broken  bone.

I'm glad he's feeling better! Starting to eat again, always a good sign. I don't think it's the time of year for those horrendous processionary caterpillars but it's worth knowing about them. I was reading a thread yesterday and I was absolutely horrified, they are SO dangerous?! I had no idea but if I ever move out to Spain, there will be no pine trees anywhere near me, I can tell you! I'm very interested to hear there may be a mobile vet? I don't drive and that's a major issue for me when it comes to vets and my own dogs. Do keep me posted? Is it worth ringing around all the local/regional vets, to see if home visits are possible? Hope he stays well and thanks for letting me know! Kind regards, Cath xx

I don´t think you should worry about processionary caterpillars, Cath.  If you move to Spain and you don´t drive, I imagine you will be in a resort or town where there are all the amenities that you would need.  Bus services are very limited or non existent in rural Spain unless you live quite close to a city. I live in the countryside, not very far inland and the only bus service is over 4 miles away in Gafarillos going to  to Almeria city and leaves at 07.30am.  The only one that return does not get here untill about 7pm, so they tell me  - and again you would have a good 3.5 mile hike to get to your home.  No buses to beaches either!    This is typical of a lot of rural Spain.

What I am getting at is that in a more urban environment you would be less likely to have worries about these caterpillars.  We have them in the spring here where I live and my dog has never been interested in them, although I have destroyed many nests.  There's no problem in the summer with the caterpillars, but as I say you would normally see them only in rural areas and we're certainly not overrun with them.  There are also scorpions in the countryside which you can find under stones when gardening but they are not the lethal sort and my dog and cat have alway ignored them, the same as snakes.  Animals can be very smart.
