Does Sorbas have decent supermarkets and shops to buy food and essentials? If I want a new washing machine for example, can I buy one from Sorbas or do I have to go to a big town? If so, to where?

Thank you

Hi, we’re looking at spendIng at least 6-9 months of the year near Sorbas from 2022, hence hoping to pick up some advice and tips prior to us coming over. However, first on our to-do list is Spanish lessons!

Cheers

Rob

To spend that amount of time here in Spain you would need to be residents which after Brexit will have lots of different qualifications, one of which will be to speak Spanish but you will need to consider income and increases in income needed yearly and health insurance cover.  so keep checking on all government sites to see what will be necessary.

Good job we’re starting to learn Spanish now! I take it that’s for new residence permits and not those already living here, thanks for the heads up though. We will be retired so not looking for income. Nearer the time will be checking who best to go with regarding health insurance. Thanks again 👍

Good advice from Alicia 11 there. Post 31/12/2020, UK becomes a third country and so subject to general immigration regime, not Residencia.  (Those already with Residencia need to ensure they are spending at least 183 days a year in Spain, or Residencia will be voided.)

Without permission to reside here, you may spend 90 days in any 180 day period, so to spend longer than 90 days as from 2022, you’ll be needing a TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero.  It will not be possible to spend only 6 - 9 months in Spain - I shall explain why.

Under the general immigration regime, quite apart from health insurance, this is a Visa that is renewable twice before you become permanent residents.  As Alicia points out, you will be required to prove an income of 27.000€ per person per year; the visa is initially for a period of one year and at the one year point, upon renewal, it is valid then for another two years.  When you renew after two years, it is again renewable for two years, after which you can apply for permanent residency.  However, something to be borne in mind :

  • Residency requirements: you MAY NOT be absent from Span for more than 10 months aggregate in that 5 year period or you will forfeit your Visa.

Obtaining a TIE means you are moving to Spain permanently, not using it as a holiday home, therefore it will not be possible under TIE to spend only 6 - 9 months a year in Spain - you MUST spend a minimum of 4 years and 4 months here to obtain permanent residency.

There is NO “special arrangement” currently under consideration for British nationals wishing to move to Spain post 31/12/20

My apologies if this is not the information or advice you wanted to hear, but .... Brexit ....

Oh heck, this is getting more complicated by the minute. Many thanks for the very informative information. We didn’t want to give up our UK home, that’s why we were going to split the time, so that’s our retirement plans crushed 😩😩. I think I need to look at a plan B (Greece) although I suspect I’m going to hit the same issues 😢

Once again thank you for being so helpful.

I am just sorry it was not the information you wanted - have you looked at Portugal? They are encouraging British nationals.  May be worth a look
