Processionary caterpillar nests

The tree nest can be treated. Usually processionary caterpillars are around Feb-April and by August there should be none around. 

Your tree can be treated. I think the local council will do this. BUT IT IS ILLEGAL TO CHOP DOWN OR DAMAGE PINE TREES.

These are likely to be old empty nests, as the new caterpillar nests are usually to be seen in the spring during cooler weather and after some rain and practically never in August.  You can buy traps online which you attach to the tree from www controlbio.com an Almeria based firm.

We saw the nests in February but would like them removed if still there when we get the keys. Your info is very helpful and although it doesn't mention caterpillars online I'm sure they can't  list everything on their website.So thank you for the heads up and we will explore further. 

Hi, this must vary by region. When we moved into our new house 2 years ago there was a double trunk pine tree in our garden that had old nests in it. We have 4 big dogs and 5 cats. We went to the town hall to ask about having these removed and the answer we got was as they were on our own land we could do what we wanted with them.

We now have no pine trees in our garden so I suggest the person posting goes to the local ayuntamiento and asks there.

Spanish pine trees are protected from felling by law. This is a National ruling. It’s not subject to Local discretion. A decade ago someone in Mijas chopped down a few in his own garden and was denounced by a neighbour and fined €8000. There are similar incidents. Not worth taking the chance! Plus - why cut down a tree to deal with a caterpillar 🐛 issue?
