Hello,

We are English, retired and live in the UK but intend to move to Spain and would like to apply for an NIE number here in the UK.

One of the requirements is "proof of need for an NIE"

Can anyone tell me what proof they found acceptable when applying for an NIE in the UK

According to Matthew, you can apply for your NIE at the Embassy / Consulate but no proof of need was required. That may have changed.

An NIE is your fiscal identification number here and is required for any major purchase. If they are asking for proof of need, then that will be a pre-sales invoice for a car or similar or deeds of a house etc.

If however you are planning to move here, you are going to apply for a Visa - NIE will be assigned at time of granting of Visa and it is not necessary to make a separate application unless you are intending to come out and buy a house / car etc prior to making your application
