Medical insurance for permanent move?

Hi All,

Firstly, massive thanks for all of the information you all provide. It's been enormously helpful for us in visiting, buying and now planning a permanent (well, semi-permanent) move.

My question is about medical insurance but is specific to our circumstances (as you would expect, i guess)!

We own a property in the area but currently live and work in the UK. We will move over there for at least two years (career break) from Spring next year. I have an Irish/EU passport and my wife a UK passport. We will both work from Spain and plan to become resident after making the move over next year. Given my EU citizenship, are the rules around medical insurance the same for us? Cover seems rather extortionate (we're fit/healthy and in our late 30s and 40s respectively) but we just can't quite pin down whether we need or should ensure that we have this cover in order to apply for residency. Advice seems conflicting. Can anyone help?

Thanks so much!

Given your circumstances would you not be better seeking advice from a professional or perhaps CAB Spain?  Most the members of the forum try to be as helpful as possible but they are not experts and sometimes give incorrect answers which only leads to confusion.

Thanks for replying. We have sought professional advice. Sadly, it too was a bit conflicting. I was reaching out here in the hope that someone here may be in similar circumstances (I.e. one person in the married couple or someone solo has an EU passport when moving over from the UK). We'll see though!

...ough!

As pointed out by your previous contributor, we aren't experts either! However, my help, for what it's worth, is based on our Visa which we applied for this year, post Brexit.

My wife and I are both UK citizens and the same age as you. We were required to have the maximum level of Medical cover and here's an emphasis, "without copayments". I.e. you do not contribute to a medical bill. This means very expensive cover that ensures you never draw on the equivalent of Spanish NHS and are not therefore a drain on the Spanish economy.

We also own a property here which did not give us preferential entitlement for residency, requiring us to apply for a Visa.

You are welcome to DM me here if I can help. Your one EU Passport will doubtless help and I'd suggest solid legal advice from an immigration specialist who can help with your application. Best of luck!
