1. There appears to be some division regarding the benefits of an Irish Passport. I understand the cost per passport is €70.00. I don;t know where somebody came up with €1000.00. In some cases Irish Passports are issued free of charge.

2. Nobody is being pressganged into applying for an Irish Passport. Merely, it may be an option to many especially those from the UK.

3. You become a Spanish citizen. Great! You're a person of the EU and qualify for any benefits you encounter. Therefore, you don't need an Irish Passport.

4. You may have a parent from Germany, France or some other non English speaking EU country. Great! You have options. But, I understand it is much easier to get through Irish red tape than that of other EU countries and our Passport People want to help. (I can't be any clearer!).

5. Long Birth Cert. -V- Short Birth Cert in Ireland - No big deal. The long certificate merely has the address of your parents at the time of your birth, their occupation and some other minor bits. It can be purchased at reduced price too. It's only a case of ticking a box. In some cases it is provided free. You can apply online for any kind of Birth Cert. in Ireland.

Only yesterday, one of my Spanish neighbours from the UK (his wife's parents are from Ireland) advised there was principle at stake and he couldn't bring himself to spend ten minutes in front of the screen of his laptop to apply.

The truth is we don't know what Brexit will bring. We don't know how the Spanish immigration department will react. We don't even know how the UK emigration people will react. My buddy in the (pretty good) real estate agency informed me there are 1200 properties for sale at any one time in Mojacar Playa. I reckon there are at least five times that number, but they're just not on the market. Have a chat with anybody possessing say a property worth more than €250,000.00. Many of them are waiting to see what Brexit brings. It is a kind of property roulette with loads at the table with their hands in their pockets just waiting to sell or keep.

I haven't mentioned the Brits in Spain "forever" with no residencia. These could be the real losers after Brexit. They can't depend on anybody.  Many of them don't have property in the UK and could find themselves on a plane even after a future minor traffic offence. I'm not scare-mongering, but the thought is scary and we all know Spanish Red Tape.

Lots of good points.

It is a shame that if you are married to an Irish passport holder you don’t automatically qualify for one as a spouse (unless you actually live in Ireland).

I’m still hoping there will be some kind of “tourist visa” for a 6 month stay, although this is unlikely.

Hi,

If you do not have any Irish roots (like myself) but your spouse has an Irish Passport it is €150 to apply and €950 if accepted for Naturalisation. I know this because I am in the process of applying. It is is a lot less if you can trace yourself to Irish roots but I can't and that is the cost even though I am in my 25th year here in Ireland

Awesome! I think I'll apply! I'm British born, came to the States 25 yrs ago and became a US citizen 16yrs ago so I have dual citizenship.  My grandad was Irish, so that Grant's me the right to an Irish passport. My question is? Can I hold 3 passports?

Thanks,

Pauline

I’m really upset that it was my great grandfather who was born in Ireland. So I have a big family over there.  I would have applied in a flash 😪.
