Hello.

I would like to introduce myself.

I am carole, and in 2026 I will be moving to spain. I am interested in the Mojacar  and Almeria areas, mainly Mojacar. I was pondering over torrevieja, as I have  connections there. I think I would be more suited to a quieter area. So really at this stage I'm hoping to get more acquainted with the whole prospect of me moving and hopefully feel at least I have had conversations and maybe a little insite to all it entails. I haven't anything at the moment specifically to ask but would welcome any snippets of information that anyone thinks might be useful. Or even a little insight on how you are finding your relocation.  Anyway thankyou for reading this . And kind regards.

Hi Carole. You will find Mojácar very different to Torrevieja: very much smaller and quieter. There are some good, knowledgeable estate agents in the area who would be able to show you a range of properties, though it is always sensible to rent first if you can, to give yourself time to confirm whether here is suitable for you or not. If you are intending to live here full time as an immigrant and you hold a British passport, you will find the process, although doable, is somewhat more complex and takes longer than pre Brexit days. Can I suggest that you contact the Spanish embassy in your current home country to get more information about this. I'd also encourage you to do as much as possible with regard to developing done fluency in Spanish. Many may say "It's not necessary as everyone speaks English here" but when you ( usually quickly) get to the stage of having to deal with any kind of officialdom, be it tax returns, driving licences, buying or selling cars or properties, visiting the doctor etc etc you'll find it is vitally important to be able to understand and make yourself understood in the native language of where you are living. Apart from that, it opens up social connections with Spanish people of all ages, which is always positive. Good luck with your venture.

Hi Carole, we had not long ago bought a property in Arboleas. At the moment it’s a holiday home, but we do intend to move out in a few yearsWe have holidayed in Mojacar on more occasions than I care to remember. Love the place, But we decided to look inland as you simply get more for you money. What will buy a 2 bed apartment in Mojacar will buy a 3 bed Villa in Arboleas. We regularly just book a hotel for a night when we fancy a day in Mojacar. Worth thinking about if it suits your situation.
Good Luck

Hi Susi. Thankyou so much for your post, I think my move maybe a little easier because of the fact I have an Irish passport, I have been learning Spanish although I think I'm doing well I seem to forget a lot the very next day ha ha , well practice makes perfect or in my case passable 😅 I also have emails sent to me every day by estate agents with properties for sale , the downside to this is I see many I would think suitable, but unfortunately I can't start viewing until very near the time, and probably by then they would have been sold. Thankyou for your suggestion about renting first I think this is a good idea , it would at least give me time to get a feel for it and a look around . Kind regards Carole.

Hi Geordiemark.

Thankyou so much for your post, I welcome any information and suggestions, as when I'm ready I hopefully will get it right the first time, as I don't relish the fact of another move. I will look at the areas you suggested. Kind regards Carole.

Hi Carole

Renting really is helpful as it helps you learn not only about living in the area generally, but also about exactly what you do/don't want when you come to buy; things like the direction the house or apartment faces can make a BIG difference to your heating bills in winter and Aircon usage in summer. Overlooking a community pool may sound wonderful until you experience the noise levels and lack of privacy that the location of some pools create. Taking lessons is an excellent way to start, but nothing beats talking to Spanish people in everyday situations. Living on an urbanisation can sometimes mean you are less likely to socialise with Spanish people and may find that your circle of new "best friends" becomes rather more limited to ones who speak little Spanish ( apart from ordering a coffee or beer) who refer to themselves "expats" and may even have voted for Brexit - to keep the foreigners out.... Fine, if that's what you are looking for, each to their own; but if not, choose your home , be it rented or owned, carefully! Remember it can be a LOT easier and much faster to buy than sell out here. 😀
