I visit Mojacar twice a year for two month spells. I believe you need an NIE number to buy a car. I had intended to buy a second hand car as a runaround as opposed to hiring as the cost is now prohibitive. Can I get an NIE number being a non resident. I have an Irish passport and driving licence. Thanks in advance for any information on this.

ou used to be able to as an NIE is only a number for extranjeros,Dario may be able to help you more

Yes, you can get a NIE as non-resident (although in Almeria you are required to show proof that you need it - i.e. pre-sales invoice for a car) HOWEVER a lot of garages will now ask for Padron as well (as car needs to be registered to a Spanish address via DGT) and as a non-resident, going on the Padrón is a very big no-no
