Go to https://www.parador.es/en/blog/pet-friendly-paradores to find out which do and the terms and conditions.

Great news - thanks for this!  I’ve saved the link because I’m always fed up that U don’t seem able to stop in paradores any more.

Hey this is great. So many ideas and choices. Never knew so many people loved their food as much as I do. Much prefer better food than accommodation. As long as rooms are clean that’s all that matters to me( oooh sounds like a song ) 😂😂

Mirasierra 300m from the A1 north of Madrid (about 1hr - 99km, near Santo Torre del Puerto and Hotel Castilles at Boceguillas were recommended on this forum previously.

I used Mirasierra 45 euro, not busy but my meal could have been better agreeing with  other comments. My friends meal was fine (salmon salad)

What I found was that taking the route up through Albacete avoided the traffic around Real Suidad and Madrid. It was much simpler and easier to navigate going round the east of Madrid and far less traffic.

I liked the pool too, though the pictures made it outdoor, it was covered and very warm. great refresher after being in a car for hours. The other thing that was , was the morning air - the hotel seems to be in a flat area but deceptive as  the altitude is close to 1000m.

If you find an alternative let us know? :)

I agree it's easier going east of Madrid, but personally prefer heading straight down towards Jaen and Granada then turning off for Almeria.  I went the Albacete route a few weeks ago and found the countryside was (on the whole) less exciting , although there were some dramatic bits.  Also the traffic around Murcia and from there to Lorca was excessive despite it being a supposedly quieter time of day.  But then  I am in the parque natural so it makes more sense to head for Almeria in any event even without the scenery and the traffic.

I also stop at Hotel Tudanca with my dog, but it is important to make sure you choose Tudanca Aranda and not Tudanca Miranda. Part of the same group but not on a direct route.  I made that mistake recently and only just managed to rescue the booking!  Another possibility a little furthe...

...r south is Hotel Milagros, also just off a motorway exit.  These two hotels have pretty basic looking  accommodation in the dog-friendly rooms, although it is perfectly adequate. But they have superb restaurants if like me you enjoy milk fed lamb. Generally standard of other dishes higher in Tudanca and the local wine is great.

I’ve stayed a couple of times at Miasierra but have to say I’m unlikely to do so again although the rooms are nicer than the other two.   On the first occasion the menu was a bit limited and not brilliantly prepared. but I put that down to Covid problems.  Last time, a month ago, I chose to stay there as sucking pig is on the menu.  It was cooked so badly I had to complain and send it back - something I almost never do.  It seemed to me it had been pre-cooked with the restaurant simply having to finish it off at a high temperature before serving.  Unfortunately it was so incredibly overcooked but the time I got it that all the meat was tough, dry and stringy. They replaced it for me with a dish of presa iberica but that was not exactly brilliantly done.

Of course many of you will not be basing where you stay around your stomach rather than the rooms, and others will not have my desire to eat meat or  the stuff which is not so easily available on the coast of Andalucia!

I agree. We have just come from Mirasierra and my wife only ate half her vegetarian dinner for similar reasons.  A shame really when the breakfast, staff, and rooms were so good.

Dear Paul

We dove down 10days ago from Santander to Palomares.with our two dogs.

Our ferry docked at 1.15 and we cleared port and customs (they only checked one dog although we have spanish pet passports) by 1.45. We stopped Area Tudanca about 30 miles south of Burgos for our first beak.Just under 3 hours. It is regukar stop and we stay overnight on our return journey. They also sell their own VERY good wine.

Ww then stqyed overnight at Honrubia south of Madrid. THe Hotel Moya 3 star booked through booking.com . It was 62 euros for a double room and although they said it would be 10 euros per dog we were not atually charged.

We then had about 200 miles to drive the next dy nd got to Palomares at 11.00am.

This basically split the journey into 3 legss to hve proper breaks but did make a couple of intermediate sops for the dogs.

Not sure of your Ferry time but diidl look on Brittny site and if you dock at 8.00 am you could do it in one day. Weused to when ferry docked early but one overnight worked well for our arrival time. There isone bit of toll 2.35euro on the motorway rund Madrid

Hope thisis helpful and have a good trip

Hello Bob Davies,

I am very interested in your response mentioning Spanish dog passports.

We came down at the end of April with our 8 month old dog. This is the first time we have done something like this. The Animal Health Certificate cost £250 and rabies jab £45, however the vet advised us to take out an EU dog passport on our return as that was accepted in the UK and especially if we would be travelling back and forth. I would welcome  your advice and experience of this.

Off main topic, but on pet passports, I recently had a bit of a horror story which might help.  I got a pet passport from my local vet here last year after paying the extortionate cost of an animal health certificate.  My dog has had all her jabs and her last rabies jab here was in March 2021.  In mid April this year, I remembered that in Spain, dogs are supposed to get jabbed every year, so I went back to the local vet here and got her jabbed again.  I headed back to U.K. on 2nd May but at border control in Santander they raised a query because it was less than 21days since she had her last rabies jab. They were extremely helpful at the port  and called a local vet.  He was able to confirm that the rabies jab she had been given in 2021 had a three year viability, despite showing a one year expiry date. But she still needed a passport showing the correct expiry dates. Fortunately the ferry was running late so I was able to go to the vet in Santander and get yet another passport - this time from Cantabria.   At least he only charged 60€ for this.  So my dog now has three pet passport - a U.K. one which is useless, an Andalusian one which will now work, and a Cantabrian one.

In short it’s well worth getting a Spanish pet passport, particularly as the Animal Health Certificate in the U.K. only lasts 4 months and costs a fortune.  But keep an eye on the expiry dates in the passport!

I contacted a company called pass pets based in Havant Hampshire. They were really helpful and told me all I needed to know regarding health certificate and rabies injection/microchipping. I was expecting it to be very expensive however, the certificate is only £90 and the rabies injection is only £50. The injection does last 3 years and I can only get the certificate 10 days before travel. I also have to take the dog with me to the place to prove she is who she is. They also told me about the tapeworm and when she needs it. Dog is now sorted 👏👏

I think much depends on whether you are intending to live here or just do the occasional visit -though even then getting an Animal Health certificate each time you travel costs a lot more than 60€ one-off payment for a passport!  If you are intending to live in Spain, or indeed almost anywhere in mainland Europe, I gather, you are required to have an up-to-date rabies vaccination. Until recently Spain was insisting on a yearly jab and so only a 12 month vaccine was given.  Now it seems they are moving to a three yearly jab.  My problem was that the vet gave the dog the three year jab at a cost of around 25€  but marked the passport giving it a 1year life span!  New dates in her passport all show full three years.  One thing I can say is that I have found the vets here to be much cheaper and on the whole much more thorough in caring for my dogs - other than the administrative slip up!
