Does anyone have any experience of using the euro starling bank account to pay utilities direct debits in Spain?

Yes,
It will depend on your utilities co, some will accept a GB Iban number, some require an ES Iban number, you need to check. We set up an N23 account also as Sanitas would only accept the ES number.
In every other respect I can THOROUGHLY recommend Starling, we have four accounts of differing flavours with them.
