Hi all!

We are in the process of selling our U.K. business, and have a residential let we can sell too, as well as our own place with a nearby 3 acre equestrian property.

What are the pros/cons & pitfalls of a move to southern Spain with our animals?  We have a dog, cat, shetland ponies, hens and a couple of other things that may not be an issue (lifespan wise!).

Currently in the fens, U.K. with a business and rental let in the East Midlands, we’re still trying to pin down a suitable Spanish location, most likely Andalusia / Murcia.

regards

Tony M.

Property doesn't increase in value in Spain as it does in the UK.  If you later go back to the UK you may find that a similar property that you sold in the UK is now out of our price range.  The climate is very hot and dry in the summer.  Animals  need shelter from the heat.  I am sure there are also lots of practicalities you will have thought of.  Good luck with your decision.

importing any animal has its restrictions and costs which you need to investigate thoroughly or at customs you will fall into a red tape nightmare.  Some animals like tortoises are not allowed as pets here.  Buying a property to match what you sell in the UK will probably not be impossible but of course it will be isolated and in the countryside so you would need a good knowledge of Spanish to converse with neighbours.  You also need to check out what visa you intend to apply for to enable you to come here in the first place.  Lots of investigation to do first.

It’s a good point about property values!👍  Maybe I should keep a toehold in the U.K.!

AFAIK, dogs and cats aren’t a great issue.  Bringing in horses is definitely doable though not cheap…. I’ve no idea about hens!

Being inland suits us TBH, though I accept my Spanish isn’t the greatest!  Initially, I was planning on a 17acre finca/cotija/whatever in The Algarve and was studying Portuguese,  Sadly, the U.K. property laws let me down when my buyer pulled out on the day of exchanging contracts…😡  I have to say, Spanish is easier than Portuguese!

Pre-Brexit wouldn’t have been an issue but I note both Spain and Portugal are offering ‘golden visas’.  I’m in the very early stages and still researching that!

Thank you for your input! 🙏🏻

What is an OCA Licence in Spain? In order to keep horses or other livestock on your land in Andalucía, you need to apply for a license at the Organismode CertificaciónAdministrative (OCA). You have to meet the following requirements to apply: – There must be a suitable (wooden or concrete) shelter or stable for the animals. – The land must be fenced.Jul 2018Above is a direct copy from a Google search.  You will probably find lots more information there too
