Hi all, bit of a complicated question.

Due to the cost of hire cars now, my father-in-law in the UK has added us to his car insurance so we can use his car whilst on holiday during this June rather than paying nearly £850 for a hire car. This cost just over £21.

My father-in-law is now 89 and has been talking about selling his car as he hardly uses it so we wondered if it would be possible for us to buy it, keep it at his house and just use it for trips to the UK. As I have Spanish residencia and Spanish driving licence, would I be able to own the car, UK registered, in the UK and insure it here in Spain as normally you can drive a car out of the country for around 3 months a year? I know you can have an English plated car here in Spain if it is just a holiday car.

Think this may be one for Dario or Matthew,

Any information gratefully received,

Thank you.

If you were to keep it at his house in the UK, it would have to be insured with UK insurer, not Spanish.  Spanish insurance companies by and large will only insure a car that is matriculated to Spanish plates which would be self-defeating.

you can drive on your Spanish licence for up to 3 (6?) months in UK, so the only issue would be whether a UK insurer would insure the car in your name

Thanks Dario, when we go over I will contact a few insurers and see if it is possible. With my father-in-law being 89 his insurance premium is over £1300 a year so wouldn't be feasible for him to insure it and we pay the premium as it would work out nearly as much as a hire car.

Thanks for your reply.
