We did the same - we've been down there for a month, got home this week. We drove hundreds and hundreds of miles around inland Almeria just trying to get a 'feel' for places. And it was so worthwhile as some places we had on our 'we like the look of this' list....we really didn't feel we were rig...

...ht for us when we saw them in the flesh. And others that were not on our radar, we loved straight away! We did not intend to buy on our visit...but we saw something exactly right for us...so we did! And the place we bought...I wouldn't have given a second glance online!

It's such a personal feeling, but spend plenty of time in each place, and if you think you like somewhere go back at different times of day to see it properly.

Congratulations thanks for the advi

We are thinking of doing the same! Where did you end up buying? I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts.
brst wisies,

Liz

We found ourselves liking Huercal Overa, so decided to try and make this our 'main town'  and searched around it.

We spent several days there and in the surrounding areas and have bought in La Alfoquia. We surprised ourselves with our choice - as we really didn't want an urbanisation, we thought we wanted more rural and land (we have this in UK)

However we have to use it within Schengen rules for the next few years, so the thought of having people around when it's empty, and less maintenance was appealing to our sensible heads. Various nationalities live there, which appeals to us and all we need is on our doorstep. 30 mins to the coast. So, we just decided to go for it!

Thank you for your reply. Certainly Huercal Overa seems a good town from my research and I have been looking at La Alfoquia and Zurgena too. They both seem lovely places, but at the moment I am restricted to internet searching! Hoping to come out later in the year. I think properties seem to be coming on all the time! So fingers crossed we will find one late summer. We would only use it to visit for holidays for a few years waiting till our youngest flies the nest. But then we may consider moving full time. Who knows. Best of luck with your purchase and move! Liz 😊

We bought in Huercal-Overa but be aware that the municipality of Huercal-Overa is huge. We bought between El Saltador and San Francisco which is only a 5 minute drive to Huercal-Overa centre. We rented beyond Santa Maria de Nieva which is still classed as Huercal-Overa but we were over 700 metres above sea level and there was a significant temperature difference as you drive down to Huercal-Overa and further down to the coast. Some people like some things and others don't, we didn't paticularly like Albox and we were not keen on Urcal but others love it and we didn't entertain Arboleas as it is not our cup of tea. We loved Cantoria (Market on Wednesday) and around that area there is Piedra Amarilla, Portaloa and Almonzora which were all okay but are 45 minutes from the coast

Hi, we bought a house out in the hills above Zurgena last year and love it. Zurgena has a small market on Friday, there is quite a good local supermarket, doctors, chemist, bank and 3 bars.

In Alfoquia there is a vet, local supermarket, bank, couple of nice bars, open air pool in summer, bowls club and restaurant. Considering they are both small places they have quite a bit to offer between them.

Enjoy the area,

Paul.

Hi dk17. This is exactly what we are intending to do. Did you hire a villa and car. If so can you give advice on the best approach for this. Plus did you visit arboleas and albox as they are our intended areas

Hi Andy. We have a motorhome, so came down in that, which made it easy for us to scoot around and really have a good look. We did visit Albox and Arboleas, but we didn't get our 'feeling' from them. Its such a personal thing, but we just knew that we hadn't found our spot. We liked Huercal Overa and we feel really happy with our decision to buy in Alfoquia, seems to have everything we could wish for. We will hopefully be completing on the sale imminently, and we can get back over to make it 'ours' and start enjoying a Spanish lifestyle (for 90 days anyway!!!!)

Hello,

Sorry to be negative but please read around this forum and others before you make your 'idyllic' move to Spain. So much has changed here and some of the worst things are still in evidence. While you are travelling about ask people what problems they have encountered. Most long term residents came before changes and now Brexit is working its way though ex-pat life so it is quite different now from when people moved a decade or more ago. Good Luck! :)

Thanks Shay we are certainly aware from reading this forum how things have changed.

I have questioned myself if it would be best to buy a place as holiday home rather than take the full plunge to begin with.

We are a few years off retirement so things could change and maybe for the better. Here’s hoping 👍🤞
