The answer depends entirely on your requirements. Having lived here for 23 years I would strongly suggest you make a list of priorities. Do you wish to be amongst mostly british folk? Do you wish to get to know the Spanish people and culture. Do you require a modern villa or an older property with more character. How far do you want to be to an appropriate airport, hospital. How far from the coast do you wish to be. We came here to intergrate with the Spanish folk who are most welcolming and providing you make an effort to conversate with them however small it is very much appreciated. We live in an old cortijo in a small village amongst the Spanish and it is the best decision we ever made.

Totally recommend Steve and Mandy if you need a base while exploring the area.

We rented for 3 months whilst we explored. We quickly realised that we did not want to live where we had rented and we did not want to live in Albox or Arboleas but that was a personal choice as we wanted a more rural area that was not overtly British and had a reasonable amount of land but if you are only here for 6 months of the year you would need a gardener/pool man. If you are not looking to move full time I would recommend an Apartment near the coast as you don't necessarily need a car and the community charges will mean the property will to some extent be maintained. We owned apartments for several years before we bought our place and it worked for us but each to their own.
