Hi All,

Just returned to our villa due to covid 19 and found this mess in the bathroom even though all shutters and windows was closed, does anyone know what Insect or creature might have caused the mess, as I am a bit worried it might be something serious, any info would be appreciated on what caused it...

... and what i need to do to stop it happening again.

Hi. We used to get something like this in a house we owned in the mountains.

It was ants. We never got cockroaches in that area. We used to use powder bought in the hardware store. Just sweep it up, give it a good wash and put down power. They can come into the tiniest spaces.

Powder

Yep! Powder - you can buy it in most ferreterias and some supermarkets - the stuff is deadly to insects and ideal to put behind cupboards, fridges, cookers and under some furniture. The unwantable creatures eat it and bring it to their commune where mass extermination can take place.

Clean the area thoroughly where you intend placing the powder. Ensure the surfaces are dry before spreading the powder. If you can leave the powder for several days before vacuuming. After that, normal cleaning will do to keep the place free of most insects especially las cucarachas. Don't spare the powder, it is useless in a plastic container left on a shelf.

If your property is vacant occasionally, I recommend before you leave to spray outside main door and back doors, cills and around windows with that spray you can buy in supermarkets.

Now the other pests, those collecting for whatever, I don't know how to get rid of them.

99% Cockroach droppings to big for ants ect. through any crack crevice, drain, they will unfortunately get in. Proprietary killer required, if you have pets be careful, or ring the Roach man to spray throughout.

Spain is full of insects. You can buy a spray that lasts a year , spray before you leave you might find a few dead ones when you arrive  cockroaches , beetles ants , spiders  even centrepieds...all plugs should be left in sinks etc and if you have a separate walk in shower that should be plugged as well...most insects will find away in thru the smallest crack or hole ..and if there are any greenhouses near expect a lot ... good luck

Some good information there from Ian. But, if you plug up all sink/bath/shower holes you risk flooding and destruction of lots of furniture and other damage.

You can purchase a kind of "tea strainer" in Lopez which can be placed in the hole allowing water to exit and preventing insects coming in.

Yes that could happen but in 13 years it has not happend to me ( flooding) I find burst pipes happen more in uk than Spain unless your plumbing is poor ,and I redone all my plumbing and electrics. ( I am a electrician )   But I did forget to add check for any holes were washing machines are plumbed in dishwashers etc .,

Feeling so lucky.  I HATE Cockroaches with a passion.   We are in the hills above Mojacar and have never had one.
