Hola,

According to the ITV inspection, I need to remove my towbar and put an protección trasera to protect the back of my car. I asked around in different garages and nobody seems te know what that is. If I don't have such a protection, my car will not be approved according to the inspection done by the ITV. Does anybody know what a protección trasera is and where can I get it. At the dumpsite they also don't know what it is. Thank you

Hi

So I understand the reason for you being asked to remove your tow bar because it has not been officially approved for use in Spain the details of which would need to be entered on your car documentation. If the car was modified in anyway to fit the tow bar it would need to be returned to the original spec without the tow bar. The term 'protección trasera' is a catch all phrase. In english it refers to the bumper or rear fender. In Spain it refers to any chassis work behind the bumper bodywork as well that may have been altered or modified in the fitting of the tow bar - holes drilled, welding etc. ITV are sticklers for original equipment. Even fitting ever so slightly oversize tyres will get you a 'fail'. Everything must be original spec unless approved and annotated on the vehicle docs.

It would seem to me the best way around it would be to have a new tow bar fitted by an authorised fitter here in Spain and have the car documentation duly annotated. This should suffice ITV requirements. Taking the bodywork/rear chassis back to its original spec. could be an expensive option.

Maybe going back to the ITV and asking them ( nicely of course ) to show you exactly what the problem is and how to rectify it might be a good start before spending money.

Hope this might have been some help and good luck.

Thank you for your response. It is very helpful. Do you know by any chance if i let the tow bar reinstalled by a fitter, with the original paperwork. Will it be okay for the ITV?

They may.

But my thoughts are unless the tow bar is of a make known to the fitter ( and there are thousands of different manufacturers of tow bars - some good, some not ) the fitter will want to fit one that he is authorised to fit here in Spain. Its not just about the fitter but the manufacturer as well as it is the manufacturer that is responsible for any warranty.

Hope it helps.

It helps a lot. So I can go to any garage and ask if they can install a tow bar according to Spanish regulations
