Hi everyone We drove down here with the intention of driving Back to the uk in December but this is very unlikely now. We have applied for residency and when we get it we need to get rid of the car. Are there any second hand dealers who might take it as trade-in? We can’t get it converted as we haven’t owned it for a year and our UK insurance won’t last beyond next month.
Has anyone else here had a similar problem or ideas for a solution?

their are dealers in the Alicante region that take RHD cars in part exchange for LHD our old neighbour did this but of course it is expensive.  Google car dealers in Alicante.

Thanks Alicia. I expect we’re going to be out of pocket but maybe offset against travelling back etc it won’t be too bad

You can insure it here until you sort it out as long as uk legal!

You do not need to have owned it a year....

I am resident and just registered a recent uk purchase.

Oh thanks. I read that it needs converted to comply with Spanish rules but this can only be after a year. Where did you get your insurance? Will the car be legal without the conversion (whatever that may be)?

We have used liberty seguros...agents everywhere.

Vehicle needs valid uk mot and taxed.

Once resident car needs to be registered or sold in a time frame.

I think there are advantages in registering your car here the same time as applying for residencia in regards to import tax.!

A good gestor will put you right, and depending of vehicle and age, might not be too expensive.

i think you'll find that you by law are not allowed to drive a UK registered car if you are a resident of Spain.  you have 30 days to register an imported car if you are a resident on spanish plates.  if not a resident at the moment you can drive for 6 months and then it must be registered or removed from the country.  while you may have insurance on paper i wouldn't like to check that with a police officer if stopped or if you have an accident and they then say have you observed the rules.   check the official site ref importing a UK plate car to Spain for correct information.
