Hola!  I am very new to this so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.  We are looking to move to Almeria in March 2020 but will be RENTING first before we buy.   I have never even been to Almeria but for some reason am being drawn to it.  I would really love to hear honest opinions on what areas are best - I don't need to be near the beach but don't want to be in the middle of nowhere.  I've seen some beautiful detached villas in Albox and surrounding areas but are they really remote?  I definitely do not want your "blackpool in the sun" sort of area,  just a few bars, shops and restaurants would suit me.  Looking forward to all your comments !!!

Hi,

I agree with Warren regards the research, don't rush into anything.

We upped sticks 18 months ago having visited the area 2 or 3 times previous to that when we visited lots of places and viewed different types of properties. We initially rented a town house in Vera Playa for 6 months, 200 m from the beach. Lovely area but wasn't for us.

In June last year we completed on a cortijo which had had most of the work done, on the edge of a small village called Llano de los Olleres. Very peaceful but is only 5 minutes into Albox which is a great town with a good mix of ex-pats and Spanish and lots of shops, bars and restaurants. Similar to Warren we are probably 40 - 45 minutes to the coastal places of Palomares, Vera Playa, Garrucha and Mojacar.

Making the move was the best thing we ever did. Hope all goes to plan.

Regards, Tony

Thanks Tony,

It's quite daunting when you first start out isn't it ??  So many different areas all look lovely online - I had my heart set on Albox, Zurgena, Arboleas sort of area and fell in love with a 3 bed detached villa there with a pool for 500 euro a month rent,  but someone has said that those areas have a huge problem with flies due to the pig farms!!  That's not something you see on Sun Sea and Selling Houses!!  So disappointed as I thought those areas would suit us perfectly.   Valle de Este is somewhere else that has been recommended to us but I thought with it being a golf resort there would not be many people living there permanently?

I guess I just need to choose an area to start off with and then if we are not happy after the initial rental period we can just move somewhere else!   We are coming over on 12th October to have a good look round so hopefully that will give us more insight.

Many thanks,

Tracy

Have you researched Turre, it's a nice little village just a short drive from Mojacar.

Hi

We live in a small village in the Alpujarras but it’s fairly close to a bigger town called Alhama de Almeria which might work for you - when we were looking we spent a while driving around getting the feel for different places - it’s the only way to do it really. Alhama is 30 mins fromAlmeria and the coast so well situated.

Thank you very much Anita,  I haven't heard of this area so will take a drive round when we come out in October.

Kind regards,

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Where we are we don't have any pig farms and don't have the problem with the smells and the flies.

I have been told that these problems are more over towards Huercal Overa where the majority of pig farms are located but haven't experienced it.

The TV programmes do tend to show only the good side to everything but, to be honest, there aren't many downsides!

Regards, Tony

Thank you so much Tony, I have seen a stunning villa in Albox that I am very tempted to pay a deposit on right now but the news about the pig farms and flies put me off!  Is there much to do in Albox?

Thank you,

Tracy

Hi Tracy

My name is Pam.  I have an apartment in Palomares Almeria which is a little village with everything you need and near to bigger villages and towns for more. Send me your email address and I will send you details of my apartment and the surrounding area.  My apartment is for long rental and I also would like to sell as I am now retired and want to see more of the world before I get too creeky. It is near the sea, you can see the sea from the front door, can walk to the beach in 15 mins.  2beds, 2 baths.

Albox is a bit out of the way. Be careful what you do . A friend of mine has had a lot of trouble with documentation.

Pam

Hi Pam

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me with details of your apartment.  We are actually looking for a 3 bedroom detached villa so the apartment would be too small for us I'm afraid,  but thank you.

Kind regards,

Tracy
