My brother needs to open an account tomorrow for his residencia application. Myself and my partner are with Unicaja but I'm told Sabadell or Cajamar might be better in Albox. Does anybody bank with them or recently opened account and if so will he need a translator (he's quite anxious and his Spanish is OK but I think he will struggle if there isn't an English speaking member of staff) also what paperwork did you need to provide? TIA

Hi Annaleise,

Try Cajamar on Ave Pio XII in Albox - they speak English and are really helpful, no need for an appointment or translator - you can open an account on line without going in but we had problems as we have UK mobiles and the online application didn't accept them.  Tell your brother to take everything he can on paper as it will be checked/scanned - passport (and NIE if he has one) + I wrote down my UK address, mobile number, email address, DOB and UK NI number too as I'm hearing impaired so it was easier to just produce that on paper - a copy of Padron and proof of income/pension (I printed out my last tax return statement 2019-2020 and that was fine) / bank accounts showing any savings.

Buena suerte!

Rach

As Rach has said but while at Cajamar (if you choose them) say you need proof of the account and proof of the balance for residencia as they are needed for residencia application.  At least they were when I got mine and they were excepted at the FO with no quibbles.  Can't remember the ladies name in Cajamar Albox but as you go in as if going to the cashiers in front of you look to the far right and that's her desk, her English is very good and she is very helpful.  If you open an online only account called Wefferent then there are no bank charges unless you use the bank counter to make a transaction instead of online or ATM.

Thank you Andy. He has just picked up his Padron certificate and he's going to Cajamar today. He doesn't have anything that proves tax payments in the UK. He was on benefits for anxiety and depression but he is far better here and has inherited €60,000 which he will be using as proof of finances to stay, he's planning on eventually going Autonomo (window cleaning and joinery) which I've advised he speaks to Gestor about (again he's got an appointment today) but he needs an account for that too so I'm just hoping he can open one with what he has. My partner opened one without proof of tax payments in UK but he opened a business account and had already registered as Autonomo. If he wasn't up in Albox I would go up and help him but he's having to put his anxiety to one side and just try on his own. He just needs to get his application for residencia in because he's running out of time and the account is the last hurdle. I've told him about the certificate thank you

Don't think I had proof of UK tax either as most of my personal belongings including paperwork were stolen whilst in storage over here but it presented no problem when opening an account.  Wasn't needed by FO either as they were happy to see a lump sum/balance in the Spanish bank.  As long as he has an NIE, padron as you state, proof of an address whether owned or rented.  Best of luck to your brother with his more laid back future over here!

My husband also has no proof of tax payments just copies of UK accounts with savings in them and he was fine, so tell your brother not to worry Anna - it did take us about an hour though so maybe a good book to keep the anxiety at bay xx
