best type of paint for indoors

We have bought a property that needs re-decorating. The paint shop told us there were two options, and outside paint which feels stightly chalky or a vinyl paint that is possible to wash. My husband is concerned that the vinyl paint will not allow the walls to breath. Can anyone help me with this....personally I want to use the vinyl but would appreciate your advice. Thanks
