On the driving licence theme but slightly off topic! As we are non-resident we are getting our international driving permits renewed (£5.50 from the post office) as we are not convinced that traffico will make the distinction of a transition period.  It just seemed a sensible precaution.

Ooh if you are non residents why do you need an international driving licence?  Don’t worry me! 😊

Cos if you are non-resident, your UK Licence is not valid in Spain now without an IDP .....

I just checked https://www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/international-driving-permit

And it states this...

To drive in Spain you will need an International Driving Permit 1949 from 1st August 2020 for visits longer than 6 months

Permit valid for 1 year

The only thing is you are only allowed to stay in Spain for three months in any one time legally

Correct, for visits longer than 3 months (or longer than 90 days in any 180 day period) you must have Residencia, and if you have Residencia, you MUST havr a Spanish Licence, so I fear the information published by the Post Office is somewhat inaccurate and misleading.

I agree that it’s misleading. I think the post office used 1st August as a cut off date because 6 months after that takes you out of the transition period. However the U.K. GOV website also says that you don’t need an international driving licence “for holidays” until January 2021.

There is so much misunderstanding with licences, residencia etc.A lot of it because the UK can't seem to make up its mind what it wants to do now that it's finally left the UK. I've still driving around in my 2 UK registered cars and my Spanish one on my UK licence. Will continue to do so till Dec 2020 after which it will need to be changed otherwise it's another driving test.Heard that that is quite tough which is surprising considering the driving ability of the average Spanish driver....

I fear already it is another test - Tráfico on their site advertised a cutoff date of 31/1/20 to commence the exchange of UK licences.  If you had not started the exchange process by this time, they (Tráfico) we’re saying you’d need to take the theory and practical test to obtain a Carnet de conducir

We live in France and are planning to be resident in Spain before the end of the year but the website here for exchanging your driving licence doesn’t open until 9th March !

With respect to Trafico I don't think they are all singing from the same hymnbook. They seemed to confused as much as the rest of us!!!
