Hi there everyone. I’m new here. Can someone please tell me if it is compulsory to register on the padron? I realise that I need the padron for certain items but is it compulsory?

Not compulsory is the simple answer. Then it gets a little more complicated. Firstly, if you are NOT a Spanish resident you should not be on the Patron.
If you are a resident it may be worth considering as there are advantages to being registered.

Thanks, we are residents but will be moving to a more permanent address after Christmas so we were wondering if it was worth registering for only 2/3 months. We’ll probably leave it if it’s not compulsory. Thank you.

Sorry to contradict ... if you are a Spanish resident, it is compulsory to register. If you are an EU citizen, residing in Spain for less than 6 months a year, it is advisable but not compulsory; if you are a third country national (i.e. UK) and NON resident in Spain, you must NOT register on the Padron.
Aggis, As you are residents, registration will be compulsory, but not worth it if you are only there for 2 or 3 months.

I was under the impression that you needed to be on the padron even as a third country holiday home owner when it comes to things like purchasing a Spanish registered car? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

You don't need to be on the Padron to purchase a Car. Bit surprised that Dario says that If you are an EU citizen, residing in Spain for less than 6 months a year, it is advisable but not compulsory. I don't see how it is advisable as being on the Padron says you are normally resident and therefore could be liable for Spanish taxation . My advice is if not resident is don't register on the Padron.

NIE number.
Holding a residence card.Registration with the Town Hall ( this certificate is named “padrón” in Spain).
I agree with you Jim - that advice though was lifted verbatim from C.A.B Spain site

This is a question that continually crops up on our FB group page. Owning to misinformation from personnel at many vehicle dealerships. Nonresidents should not be registered on the padron (unless habitual residents of a town in Spain). Non residents many who own holiday homes here are entitled to purchase an car and the majority do. They are not registered on the padron. What is needed to purchase a vehicle is your ID such as passport or ID card and a NIE number.
Note* The padron is a census and could have tax implications for those registering. By being inscribed on the register, you are stating that you reside in Spain.
In addition to the above I have read that if you are registered on the Padron and are stopped whilst driving by the Policia they can expect and demand that you have a Spanish Driving LicensePosted: Sun Oct 9, 2022 3:48pm

Thanks Jim - that’s the actual passage I was searching for when I found the other “advice”
The short version is “if non resident, DON’T go on the Padrón, no matter what ayuntamiento or solicitors tell you”
