Hi all,

I recently signed up to this forum and have gleaned some excellent information looking through the recent posts.

Currently looking around the Vera playa, Mojacar area for a smaller second property which we would use primarily in the winter months to escape the worst of the British weather. With this in mind we are tentatively landing to fly out in July/ August to actively look at properties.

Moving away from the beachfront seems to get you a larger property for your money. We are drawn to developments similar to Al Andalus Thalassa and Valle Del Este. We have also recently seen property at Desert Springs.

Appreciate any advice given particularly on the above developments - Pros and Cons!

We have been in a similar position for more than 6 years since retirement, spending 2-3 months before Christmas and another 2-3 months in the New Year, to avoid the UK winter. All this has now ended now we have really left the EU. We are now restricted to 90 days in any 180 day period, so we can now longer stay for 4-6 months in Spain (Europe) over the winter.

We have never considered buying due to the security risks, the ongoing costs and the maintenance of the property. Renting is by far the better option for us as we can move around Europe and elsewhere to suit us, and it works out cheaper in the long run.

Insulation is not only applicable to desert springs, it applies to 99%of new construction, ie last 30 years. Cold in winter requiring heating and very hot in summer requiring ac. The older properties inland have 600mm thick rubble walls, background heat ie woodstove, suffices in winter and a fan ...

...in summer. Downside is they are prone to damp as Spain never used a dpc. On old properties all ways check the roof has been rebuilt with concrete beams, the old timbers look pretty but are pretty useless as structural members.

Hi Alun,

Thanks for your reply. I can totally understand why many in a similar position to us choose to rent rather than buy. All the points you have raised are valid ones especially, with post Brexit changes.

Buying a property which we can call a second home is something that we have wished for, for awhile. Looking at it with just my financial head on I can see that it doesn’t make sense! However it is something we are not going to rush into and the replies that we receive on this thread will help us weigh up the pros and cons as we look to find a property.

Once again thanks for taking the time in your reply.

All the best,

Mark
