Morning,  How are you, we have YUK weather here at the moment, rain rain and even more rain, and I think you have over 20 degrees and sunny.

Anyway, when we have been back to the Uk for an extended holiday I have gone to my old GP for our meds, no problem they just registered us as a temporary patient.  But I wonder if I would get say a hip replacement should I ever need it or any other long term care, or would they just say, you...

... are a Spanish resident you must go back there for treatment. Just like the Spanish do if you go to the hospital with a Ehic card, they only give you emergency treatment and then tell you to get on a plane back to your own country, (and that not hearsay thats from experience) Its a bit of a grey area, because the UK pay Spain for our health care, so if we receive long tern health care whilst we are in the UK then the UK are effectively  paying twice for the treatment. I hope I have explain that clearly enough.

The waiting list in the UK for surgery is a lot longer than in Spain … I imagine for either emergency or mundane matters you’d be fine, but if it’s elective surgery you may have a problem being a Spanish resident and be required to consider such surgery in your country of residence

Yes I think your right. The surgery waiting list might be shorter but other lists are far longer. i.e. I have a friend who has been waiting for a colonoscopy since last August and she has very significant symptoms, I myself have been waiting for an appointment for the ;digestive clinic for 2 years, and I have had to pay privately to have 2 moles removed because the Spanish doc just didn't want to know.

Wow … my wife has hearing difficulties due to malformed Eustachian tubes, and has had around 22 surgeries on her ears over her life.  She needs to see an ENT regularly and for that she needs a referral.  The longest we’ve ever had to wait was 2 months to see the ENT.  She was also suffering paranosmia and wondered if she had polyps; she needed a CAT scan and we had one barely a week after seeing the Doctor … that’s here in Vera, with ENT / CAT Scan in Huércal-Overa.  The service has been superb

Sorry to hear about your wife's hearing problems. My husband got Sepsis and was in HO intensive care and the treatment was brilliant, what I find in this area is the problem is with the G.P's and the referrals. For some reason they just dont get thru and when they do we are told of 2 year waiting lists. If it was something serious we could be dead before we get to be seen. My GP has told me I need a Cat Scan, but he cant order it, I have to be referred to the digestive clinic which has a 2 year waiting list. So as my husband has health problems due to a stroke he had many years ago I cant risk him being on a long waiting list so we have decided to return to the UK in the not to distance future. We only came for 2 years after having to leave Egypt when the spring uprising started, and we have stay 12 years moving about Spain to see different areas. its been fun, but health at our age must come first.

Have a nice day

Hi Jenni, I have friends who just go to their previous doctor in the U.K. whenever they need to, they have been resident in Spain for years, no one seems to check. Nothing to lose by trying, they can only say, very politely, don’t you live abroad lol.

I knew some people who did the same with their NHS dentist in the Birmingham area whilst residents in Mojácar.

My husband has had a hip replacement just this January absolutely amazing hospital, Virgen Del Mar Almería. No waiting time, he was referred in December after a scan and operation done early January and home in 5 days. Coming from Ireland where the health service is from the dark ages we both have been seriously impressed by medical care here. Our GP in Albox is fantastic.

I believe we Spanish residents are entitled to healthcare in the UK when we visit there.  Check out the UK rules and blurb around obtaining healthcare in Spain, I think that is where you'll find the info you need

I obtained my 10 year permanent residency last year but circumstances have kept me in the UK since October last year

If l register with HMRC as a UK resident (if l need to)8 will l still be able to keep my Spanish residency eg dual residency or do l forgo it? I currently pay Spanish taxes.

The problem is if you spend more than so many days in the U.K. in any tax year you become liable for U.K. tax whether officially resident or not. Don’t know how many days exactly but it tells you on the HMRC self assessment tax return. If you are resident in Spain you are liable for tax there so you need to speak to your Spanish accountant to inform them that you will be a tax resident in the U.K. for the time you spend there and find out what you need to do to adjust your tax obligations to Spain for that period
