We are currently suffering with wasps around our pool.  We have ignored them initially, working on the basis that they can do their thing and we'll do ours, but my wife has now been stung twice, which appears to hurt...a lot!  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Traps using a sweet liquid bait don't seem to work.

I think they may be nesting in a roof of an outbuilding, but there look to be dozens of separate entry points - any pest control people who may be able to destroy the nests?

Is anyone else suffering the same problem, or is it just us?

Unfortunately, this is a fact of life anywhere there is water. It's not just here in Rubio. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is nothing much that can be done short of fitting a fly screen.

Ditto, we have a pool cover and for whatever reason, when we roll up the cover wasps seem to appear from nowhere but as of yet we havent been stung.

We also have a fly free which gets the odd few flies but keeping fly swatters handy and having a good eye/arm keeps them down some, as do the many fry/wasp, double action canister sprays.

We've had quite a lot of a red backed flying insect and some cricket/locust type pest, about 2" long, just batting these seems to give them the idea theyre not wanted and we dont see them for days.

As has been said its a sad/bad part of enjoying life in spain.

The double action spray cans for flies and wasps can be had at most asia shops and we got cheaper ones at our local Consum. Very effective. Swatters do give you a sense of achievement tho just seeing the damn things on the floor lol.

Kleeneze seem to offer a type of old fashioned fly paper window sticker thing in flowery patterns.

Hope that helps.

We put pool salt into ours and it really does deter wasps as they cant drink it.

That's an interesting option.  Do you mean that you have a salt water pool with a different regime, or do you add some salt in addition to the chlorination processes?

We were having same problem in Urcal.  There is a plague of them apparently.  We were told a brilliant trick that really does keep them down.  Put some washing up liquid in and put the pump on, not too much as all you want to achieve is a white film.  The wasps drown.  You do then have to get them out, but our first go, we must of got rid of at least 300.   We've found a few nests and have destroyed them.  Hope this helps!

300 dead wasps ?, you need a blue peter badge. We live in Urcal too but havent seen that number.

300 dead is 300 less to bother others.

We'll be taking our cover off around lunch time, hopefully there wont be too many if any but we'll have the double action spray to hand. If the numbers go up we'll try the washing up liquid trick, thx.

People have been saying that there are more wasps this year than anyone can remember.

Small flies too.  As has been said, where theres water theres wasps.

Friends just had a fly free pool enclosure fitted and when we popped in yesterday it was a haven of wasp and fly freedness lol, not a one.

What you may or most likely find is that if you have a pool, wasps seem to congregate around the shallow end where you may have a ladder.

We came across a chlorinator style insect killer that you toss in the pool at the ladder end and it has tablets like a chlorinator that dissolve, takes a few days to get going but is effective.

For flies and some wasps dumb enough you can get yellow chrystals from the Longo over Albox way, bit of water and mix it uo to make a yellow liquid which turns almost to a jelly like substance, thats really effective.
