We have found a wonderful property in Velez Rubio, however, apparently it is next to a pig farm. Is there many pig farms in the area and what are the down falls living next to one

Thanks in advance

Cliff

Hi,

Smell, flies, noise.

Just depends on your tolerance.

Sitting out & putting washing out can be problematic although flies can be negated, to a degree, by a fly free zone/ zones. Expensive to erect and also the cost of replacing panels-which of course is never mentioned.

We unfortunately are currently living in almanzora valley and the flies are driving us crazy , it could be just our property I suppose , but the nearest pig farm to us is about 2 km away so it's not from that

We nearly bought a house next door to a pig farm, the smell on certain days was horrendous, and the flies covered everything. this was in the UK, where the laws governing livestock etc are strict. Not sure what laws there are governing pig farms in Spain!!!!  The other consideration is resale, I don't think you would find many people willing to buy a property next to a pig farm.  Good Luck.

The upside - free pork, if your stealthy, the flies are horrendously bad this year, we dont live near a pig farm at all and the flies are bad, but as BobL says the flies and smell is horrendous, we pass one on the way up to his cottage and it is bad but saying that I use to live in Lisburn in N.Ireland and we were near to the Glue Factory/ Knackers Yard for horses and the smell was bad but after a while you do become accustomed to it BUT your guests wont?

Do NOT buy a house anywhere near a pig/goat farm. We have friends who back onto one and they have always regretted buying it and you will find it almost impossible to resell should you need to. People say you shouldn't buy within 5km of one and think this is probably true. We don't live anywhere near one but flies are an absolute pain this year, partly because we had rain a couple of times in June.

There are thousands of properties for sale at present, ours included, so find yourself somewhere else.

Good luck and best wishes,

Paul.

this may well be a dream property for now, once in it you will have to put up with the smell from hell not to mention all the flies and you can forget about a resale so don't do it, move on from it after all there are thousands of properties for sale give this one a great big NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy house hunting but once out for those property sharks !!!

Anticipating our move out here we expected lots of flies, so researched and found a company online with a product called The Buzz.  We bought a few bottles and refills that we half fill with water and hang around the garden, especially the pool, but not too close or you’ll notice the smell!  It works by mimicking rotting meat and they attract thousands flies to their doom.  One sachet lasts between 2 and 3 weeks, and for us it has made a serious amount of difference, especially where we’ve set up two in a crossfire position around the pool.  I brought them with us from England but have found a similar brand out here in a DIY store in Arboleas.  Not expensive.  Just thought this might help someone who is struggling with the flies this year.
