I'm moving to San Juan soon and wondering how bad the mosquitoes are? I suffer pretty badly from bites and I'm also asthmatic so the plug ins aren't great. Will we need to get mosquito nets on the windows and doors and possibly for the bedrooms?

I think you will find that the question was in English, so I would have thought the reply would have been in English ?

Mosquitoes here are a fact of life in Spring / Summer - especially if you live anywhere close to any standing water.  Bug sprays for the body will be your friend as will Citronella sprays.

Nets for the doors / windows etc will certainly help, but if you are susceptible to bites and the plug-ins are a problem, then a mosquito canopy that goes over the entire bed (suspended from the ceiling) will certainly aid in a peaceful bite-free nights sleep.

San Juan de Los Terreros is much better than a lot of areas.  I saw them spraying the rambla a few days ago.  We live close by and visit almost daily.  As it is by the sea far less of a problem than inland. We have very little problem  with flies or mosquitos.  However when at Vera Playa I got covered in bites. Avoid walking in ramblas at peak breediing times and wear long trousers if out walking there later in the day.

hi we have screens on all windows even though we dont get bothered with mossies where we are in garrucha, but i dont want flies etc in the house.  when you go out get skin so soft, either in uk before you come out or here at avon.es, its dead cheap so smother yourself in it, we in the british army swear by it for all biting nasties, it really does work.

Spot on! Avon Skin so soft is brilliant as a repellant! However, its not perfect and if the pesky things do get through it Anthisan is the go to cream for relief.

Mosquitos are ubiquitous in Southern Spain. But near the coast if the breeze is more than 5mph you should be OK.

My practice:

1. Use agua de colonia - ‘Spanish Baby’ protection. This is sold on Mercadona baby foods and accessories section, but it’s in other places such as Carrefour. Sprayed on arms, neck and legs in the evening, it works. And it’s cheap and non-oily, unlike the Avon product…

2. Take an antihistamine tab daily- sold as a hay fever tab. If you do get bitten this reduces the bite itching and the size of the bite.

At least mosquito bites are not as bad as Scottish midge bites!

'But near the coast if the breeze is more than 5mph you should be OK.'    Can't say I agree with that.

'Skin so soft' Oily? isn't that good for the skin too? And really its not THAT bad , and it is effective!

And as for antihistamine tabs - They have side effects that are not conducive to having fun! ( For want of a better phrase!) - Having tried both its Anthisan cream for me any day. The cream goes direct to the spot unlike tabs.

At least mosquito bites are not as bad as Scottish midge bites! And yes, I'll concur with that!

Wind is an effective method against mosquitoes and other airborne pests. The reason seems obvious: it prevents them from circling and landing on you, like a windstorm keeping a plane back from its descent. Mosquitoes don't fly or locate potential hosts well when wind speeds are greater than ~ ideally 10 mph - but 5 mph may suffice, as I found in Kenya as a child living on the coast - the sea breeze makes all the difference!

And a simple fan can provide indoors motion that exceeds these speeds. Avoid being outdoors when they are most active.
