We will be driving from Kent in May by van to San Juan (possibly with our dog too).

Any recommendations, advice, guidance, half way accommodation would be appreciated.

We have not driven this distance before.

Considering leaving from Dover to France then drive to Spain.

Thank you.

It obviously depends on how much driving you want to do each day but the route we used to take was Calais to Lyon area about 6 hours drive. Lyon to Tarragona area another 6 hours then final leg another 6 hours Tarragona to Mojacar.

We have also done Calais to Carcassonne /Narbonne one day, then Carcassonne/Narbonne to Mojacar another day.

We do a route from London to SJ de Los Terreros, staying overnight at least twice on route. It’s probably about 25/26 hours drive in total (plus Channel crossing) so although doable with one overnight I would not recommend it. Consider staying first night around Bordeaux and second night on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, perhaps in Huesco or a bit further on, around Zaragoza. There are many options for hotels that can be booked on the internet and can be cancelled on the day (particularly in France- Ibis, Hotel B&B, Premier Classe for examples) if plans change. We like flexibility as some days the travel is just more tiring than others, so it’s good to be able to go a bit further or less accordingly. These hotel chains are really good for overnight stopovers. Usually they are situated walking distance from restaurants and you can check-in at a machine at the entrance if you arrive at an unsociable hour. Some good meals and decent nights’ sleep can be part of the holiday.

Hi . Not sure if you’re bringing over your household contents. Just be mindful, if you are, you will have to pay tax on your items . You will need an inventory of contents . Anything new , have the receipts .

We drive with our dog from london to javier every year. We stop at clermont ferrand on day one, Reus on day two which then leaves around 3 hours next morning. To get to San Juan would take an extra 3 hours on from javier so around 6 hours on day 3

We are looking to buy in San Juan, appreciate its smaller than javier, but anyone know if there are any similarities at all, I’m hoping it’s just as Spanish and unspoilt?

Used to holiday in Javier so do know the area. St Juan is expanding but still very small compared to Javier, much more Spanish, cheaper than than the Costa Blanca generally and in my humble opinion much nicer.

Thanks Jas for your reply! We love Javea but realistically 240 euros is not going to buy us a villa with a pool there, so we are looking for an alternative. San juan does sound perfect. I have done lots of research online and it looks tranquil, but with enough going on in the way of restaurants and bars to keep us amused. I looked at the Mar de Pulpi but would prefer an older property we are in javea for August so may drive down and have a good look around at the area. You know when you just get a feeling you have discovered something special that not many people know about, thats the feeling I am getting without even visiting yet

Hi Steve

If you like San Juan de los Terreros in August then you will love it the rest of the year! It will be the busiest it can get with all the Spanish families who come year after year.

Right now it's perfect, beautiful weather, bars and restaurants open and a handful of people on the beach at the weekend.

We live just up the hill in a small village, 3 minutes from the sea, where your budget would buy you a lovely home. Obviously on the coast it is more expensive and more populated.

Good luck on your search!

Hi Anna

it sounds idyllic, do you mind me asking what village would be 3 mins drive to the sea, would that be Pulpi?
