HMRC told us that due to the banking regulations they are no longer able to pay directly into our accounts, they had to send us cheques. Ergo we had to send said cheques to family in UK in order for them to pay into our UK accounts!!!
It may vary depending on payment type, but when I contacted HMRC on my UK state pension, they suggested paying it direct into my Spanish Cajamar account in euros. They’ve been doing this ever since and it actually hits my account the day before I used to get it in my UK account. Exchange rate v good and I don’t get charged by the receiving bank. I have found sometimes that I get two different answers from HMRC and I had to deal with it by telephone but might be worth it for people doing regular HMRC transfers although probably not much you can do about the cheque you have just received
