Bit of an odd question I know, but has anyone here drove their car over from the uk and then got rid of it when the time has come to get a Spanish l/h/drive car on Spanish plates? We are planning on loading up the car and driving over when we move in May. I understand the process of converting to Spanish plates and the tax is time consuming and a bit pricey so would be better off buying a second hand Spanish car.

I would have thought part exchange is virtually unheard of, as who would want a british car anyway and what would a garage do with it?  Would I need to advertise it locally and see if someone going back to Britain would buy it to take it back or would I just have to scrap it and take the hit? Its a 2004 Lexus IS200 and would seem a shame to just scrap it.

Hope everyone is having a good time this Christmas

Best wishes,

Kev.

We had the same problem deciding, but only two weeks to get here.

There are small dealers that will take a uk car in px, main dealers usually will not.

You will not get a lot for it, all the excuses etc

Had we had time we would have sold our car in the uk and probably hired a car to drive here (we had to travel this way to bring our dog to Spain) would have been infinitely cheaper than the massive loss we had to take on our three year old car which only had 15k mileage on it. We lost 3 grand on the sale price over the uk prices. Because we were permanently moving and buying a villa here you only get one month to get rid of the uk car or convert it to Spanish reg, and that's expensive.

Whatever hearsay you here about uk converted cars understand this, quite rightly the Guardia Civil do not like them. Why should you drive with the steering wheel on the wrong side they do not like it. If you feel brave and think you will not be picked on, fine. We wouldn't take that chance.

Buy a lh drive car, be safe, be legal. There is enough to contend with without being nervous of road blocks.

We have a neighbour that flouts the law and so far for the last 18 months he has got away with driving his rh drive car here as a resident. Many ex pats do this.

We would not break the law or indeed run the risk.

Go legal get rid of your car, hire one on a on way basis and buy a Spanish car. Hope this helps you to decide.

Thanks for that info. I agree 100% in the legal aspect of it as we have a good friend in the Guardia Civil and would not like to annoy him by taking him into town in my old British car :) I would never hear the end of it lol.

Its an old car so not bothered too much about making any money on a sale, just happy to know I can get rid of it when we arrive. We too are bringing over our Spaniel with us :)

I noticed an advert in the Euro Weekly or Sol times the other day which bought cars including RHD. I will look out for it next week and put it on here.

Yeah thanks for that Jas. If you see it copy it over to me please. Just happy to know there is a market for RHD cars out here.

Hi again keV

Found the advert I saw AA car sales Mojacar Playa info@AAparking.es is their email 950 459 208 telephone

Venus www.venuscars.com 965 368 274

Both these are say rhd cars bought. I would say though that I have no personal experience of either of these companies just saw the adverts.

When we came over we brought our rhd Volvo convertible and spent a fortune having it matriculated, new lights etc. Then it broke down and the parts were hard to come by so it was off the road for a few weeks. In the end we put it in the scrappage scheme and got the 2000 euros off a new car. A very expensive exercise!!

Hi Jas

Thanks for the website and details. Just glad we can off load the motor when we get over to Spain. As I mentioned I am not bothered about making money on the car, just glad I wont have to scrap it as its a good solid car. A few hundred Euros will pay for a decent couple of nights out :)

If you know of anyone or if there is anyone on here who would like to take the car off my hands please let me know. Wont be there until around May time so if someone is looking for  motor to take them back home to Blighty for the summer, they will get a bargain :)

Regards,

Kev.
