Hi all,

We’re potentially looking to move to the Huercal Overal/Santa Maria/Urcal/Los Lopez area and have been warned about pig farms. Can anyone in these areas advise if this is still a problem or is it something more historic and not much of an issue these days?

Many thanks

The areas you mention are rural Spain, there are pig farms, goats and agriculture.  Therefore, there are 'country' aromas and inevitably flies.  Some people don't mind it others can't cope/abide it.  Personally, we had a great time living in the campo and loved our time there.  We now live in an urban area, near the sea.  Instead we have neighbours and mosquitos. Nowhere is utopia but everywhere has plus points and minus points.

To be honest the biting flies can be especially annoying and numerous in the summer in parts of this region.  I have not seen 'anti- fly' cages built  to relax in, or surround pools anywhere else ( of course that does not mean they don't exist else where) and these are not built without a reason.  Often small farms used to have an intensive pig building, but EU rules have meant that many have been abandoned as they could not comply, fewer large modern ones have been built. That is one reason to rent a place and test out every aspect of a potential purchase before parting with money, we all have different preferences on what compromises we are happy with.

Hi Dan, I live in Las Piedras, just before Los Lopez, there are no pig farms near us but we still get the occassional morning where the pig man has decided to spread his fields with their manure and it stinks, but it passes, and we have goats that walk the rambla that also pong a bit, especially when the dog finds and rolls in it.  Pig Farms only smell when they are being emptied, there is one next to the bar in Nieva but again that only smells when its being moved around (cleaned and emptied) you get used to it......cows and horses in UK, pigs n goats in spain

It is interesting how things change - there used to be lots of live donkeys in Spain  and big straw ones on tourist planes going home.  Not now.  Not many dairy herds now in England, now it is more expensive to buy mineral water than milk in the shops,  it is difficult even to break even as a diary farmer.  East Anglia has quite a lot of outdoor pigs, and there are horses and ponies for recreation and some flocks of sheep.  The  English government tells farmers to do as the Spanish have, 'diversify' - provide holiday accommodation, farm shops etc and build more and more houses on green land.

Hello.

Have a look at Goñar, a Spanish village ten minutes from Huercal Overa and Urcal. It is pure tranquility and the pigs seem to have gone!

We have a two double bedroom ( both ensuite ) house with stupendous views.

It is for sale as we are moving to the coast.

You are welcome to come and visit.

Saludos from,

Dot and Phil.

Hello former landlady!

Yes, Can confirm that the place is wonderful (the area, the village, and the house mentioned, rented it for a year), and it is a good example of what to expect around that area.

There is - or at least was - the occasional piggish smell if the wind came from the wrong angles at the right time, but nothing that spoiled the amazing experience of living in the country.

If you like hiking the area has some incredible places and routes to explore.

Good times, good memories, no bad smells 😁

We have just moved to the edge of El Saltador, there is a distinctly ‘rural’ aroma sometimes in the morning, but we don’t mind it, it’s not overpowering. There are flies, a bit annoying, but again not over powering….. the peace and the views more than make up for it.
