Hello, we are looking to buy in the area and to spend winters there. I am having trouble finding out about weather in the mountain areas. I am coming to Spain for my health and I need dry / warm weather. Humidity and rain not good. I know that on the coast the weather is perfect but I am wondering if it is rainier or colder in the winter as you go up into the mountains? These three villages appeal a lot but I would like to find out more about winters...

Many thanks indeed

Kitty

Hi, Totally agree with Kevin. You could be looking at a 10 degree difference in temperature. As well as Mojacar Playa we have Las Norias an hour inland & on a mountain. Cold & damp in winter & heating relatively expensive here.

If not Mojacar, Vera Playa, Villaricos then think of Turre, Antas, or Palomares.

Every Best Wish,

Bob and Sandra

Kitty,

I would avoid living in mountains.

I lived in mountains last winter and Spanish housing is not built for it. I was freezing even with three different forms of heating. It was also very damp. Never again for me!

Agreed! We moved into Almanzora valley and last winter it snowed! Not good for my arthritis! Not snowed for 90 years and it snowed our first year. Ffffffffing freezing!

Marble floors and no central heating! Avoid the mountains!!!!

Mountain regions will be cold, will get snow period.

We live within sight of Colonel bobs place in the valley at Urcal, we've not been told about and big fluctuaions in temps, its great right now, pools 31 degrees today, great weather the next weeks or so.

If you can, google average temps for your target areas, try and go back 3 years or so.

Our villa has air con, hot and cold, we have ceiling fans, a must right now if your new place doesnt have A/C but a/c units right now are on sale everywhere, but its not buying them its running them as like has been mentioned, energy is expensive, most everywhere runs off bottled gas at around €15 a bottle, our most recent electricity bill was around €75 thats using an electric oven, electric water boiler, just swapped for a new one so hoping for some savings there.

Fan in the bedroom on all night, a/c not on all that much just to cool the bedroom initially, pool pumps, irrigation.

Night garden lighting is all solar but pretty lol.

Other bits n bobs are just charging laptops, tablets cell phones diy tools etc.

We only need bottle gas right now for the barbie but have another bottle just in case of an unexpected cold snap. Portable gas room heaters can be bought for around €100 with an average use bottle lasting around 2 weeks.

We have a heat pump for the pool which will extend the pool season by a few months at either end, right now its possible to skinny dip at 12 midnight lol.

Hope some of this helps, better off down the mountain lol.

Hi Kitty, we live in the Almanzora Valley in a small Spanish village called Huercal Overa. It does get down to 0c sometimes in winter but days are usually quite good. We have an old village house, have a pellet burner in our lounge which is great, only really used it about a dozen times last winter. We are approx 30 mins from the beaches at Vera Playa and Mojacar.

We looked at some of the higher altitude places but dismissed them for same reasons as others have stated on here.

Hope you find somewhere,

Best wishes,

Tony and Karen.

Hi, We live in El Pinar de Bedar. We have been here for 18 years and came to live in this area also for my health.

The weather suits us perfectly. If you have a south facing window that catches all the winter sun it keeps the house warm by day but we need heating (log fire) in the evening.

We can watch the rain move around us from the Almanzora valley up to Murcia. This is the driest corner of Spain.

It has been hot this year from early Jun and no let up insight yet! We live overlooking the sea and always have a lovely sea breeze to keep cool in summer.

Bedar is a lovely place to live and there is a really nice social community around. It also has 4 bars to choose from. The down side is transport. None in El Pinar and only 1 bus a day from Bedar which I think goes to the hospital in Huercal Overa.

Hi, you could do much worse than check out Accuweather for youre target areas.

Just been on there and the long range forecast including the beginning of December is showing daytime temps of around 17 with nite times as low as 10 !,  so as long as youre intended new home has some heating then I'd suggest that these areas may not be the best if youre coming to Spain for health reasons.

Hi

I would suggest that if you are coming her for the warmth and lack of humidity, look to the coastal areas. The coastal temp is lower in summer and higher in winter as the sea temperature helps control the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter.  The relative humidity is lower in winter but in summer not as parching dry as the hills inland. I have a friend who lives in the, not very big mountains near me and at times you are in the clouds, damp and freezing and in the summer very hot and dry.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi

I have experienced both, my mum lives inland and it is always a few degrees cooler than on the coast. We are in San Juan de los Terreros and settled in very well. We have often found it warmer.

I think the previous comments cover all you need to know, it might be worth renting beforehand and visiting areas that you’re interested at each time of year to ensure you make the right decision

Good luck with your choice,
